Gorloks Suffer First Loss Of Season To Top-Ranked Bears

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's soccer team closed out the non-conference portion of the 2024 schedule by hosting the top-ranked Bears of Washington University Wednesday night at WWT Soccer Park. The Gorloks suffered their first loss of the season to the Bears by the final of 0-3.

In the first five minutes of play, WU's goalkeeper Courtney Haneline recorded four incredible saves and faced one penalty kick shot. In the ninth minute, Payton Montana had a great opportunity to crack the scoreless match but her shot was saved by WU's goalkeeper Sidney Connor. Webster and WashU battled the end lines for the next 15 minutes as Haneline collected four additional saves. The Bears struck first on the scoreboard in the 19th minute on a goal by Grace Ehlert.

In the 35th and 38th minutes, the Gorloks added intense pressure to the defensive line of WashU that resulted in turnovers and two scoring opportunities that were just wide by Grace Rodgers. The Gorloks contained the Bears for the remainder of the half as WashU took the 1-0 advantage to the halftime break.

Webster came out in the second half very aggressive on the offensive side of the pitch that resulted in two shots by Lucy Elfrink and Mya Stegen and two corner kicks. In the 49th minute, the Gorloks were awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Moments later, Stegen took the free kick and blasted a near-perfect shot to the upper crossbar but the shot was saved off the fingertips of Connor.

For the next 23 minutes of action, WU's Haneline added six more saves to her night. However, the Bears added goals in the 75th and 79th minutes by Ehlert and Olivia Clemons. In the final ten minutes, the Gorloks added two shots, a header that went just wide by Isabella Dickneite and a right foot rocket by Rodgers.

For the match, Haneline had career-night in the net with 22 saves as Rodgers led the offensive unit with three shots.

The Gorloks will travel across the Mississippi River and open conference play on Saturday, September 28 at Principia College starting at 1:00PM in Elsah, Illinois.
