ELSAH, Ill. - The Webster University women's soccer team opened St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (SLIAC) schedule with a dominant 7-1 victory over Principia College on Saturday. WU's
Payton Montana led the offensive attack with two goals while five other student-athletes netted a goal. With the victory, the Gorloks improve to 6-1-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
The Gorloks started this match on the attacking side of the pitch and blasted nine shots towards the net in the first 20 minutes of play that resulted in a goal by last week's SLIAC Defensive Player of the Week in
Sienna Inouye. In that stretch of play,
Grace Rodgers blasted five shots as Principia goalkeeper Christin Walls recorded four saves.
Five minutes later, the Gorloks orchestrated a fantastic offensive attack that resulted in a goal by
Payton Montana that was assisted by
Riley Cappozzo for the 2-0 advantage. Webster and Principia battled between the end lines for the next 15 minutes with scoreless play.
In the 41st minute, the Gorloks pushed the ball near the box when
Claire Thurmond scored a goal that was assisted by Rodgers for her second goal of the season. Webster battled for the remainder of the half and took the 3-0 lead to the halftime break.
The Gorloks came out in the second half with the same offensive energy that resulted in three goals. In the 52nd minute, Montana added her second goal of the match that was assisted by
Mya Stegen. Shortly later, Stegen recorded her first goal of the season with a goal in the 56th minute.
Four minutes later,
Mackenzie Sundhausen recorded her second goal of the season that was assisted by Stegen. In the 64th minute, the Gorloks capped off the scoring with a goal by
Lucy Elfrink as that goal marked her second of the season.
One minute later, Principia added their lone goal of the match from Makayla Kurtz that generated the final score.
For the match, the Gorloks blasted a total of 26 shots as 17 were on goal and allowed only four shots on goal. In net,
Courtney Haneline recorded three saves that contributed to the victory.
The Gorloks will continue SLIAC play and start a three-game homestand on Wednesday, October 2 hosting Eureka College at
