Gorloks Drop Five Set Battle To Red Devils In SLIAC Opener

EUREKA, Ill. - The Webster University volleyball team opened SLIAC play with a visit to Eureka College Tuesday night. The Gorloks battled the Red Devils in all five sets but dropped the match by the final score of 2-3.  

Webster and Eureka opened this match exchanging points as Grace White got the Gorloks going with a kill. The Gorloks and Red Devils battled back-and-forth to a two-point Red Devil advantage at 10-8. Moments later, the Gorloks erupted for a 16-3 run that started on a kill by Megan Zablonski

In the run, White led the Gorloks with three kills while Lauren Harms added one kill and two service aces. In addition, Ellie Biedenstein, Alyssa Jones, and Eva Tarlos each contributed a kill. The run was capped off by a service ace by Harms that got the Gorloks to set-point at 24-13. First-year Leah McGrath closed out the set with a kill that was assisted by Delaney Morio that took the first set by the score of 25-16. 

The Red Devils opened the second set with a 6-1 run that was snapped on a kill by Jones. Webster and Eureka continued to battle fiercely as each team recorded a 3-0 run to the set score of 8-14. With a five-point deficit, the Gorloks chipped back in the set with a 8-2 run that started on a kill by Zablonski. In the run, Tarlos added two more kills to her total while White capped off the run with a kill that tied the set at 16. However, the Red Devils closed out the set with a 9-2 run that even the match at one set apiece.   

Eureka started the third set with a 9-4 advantage as Webster earned points on two kills from White and a kill by Jones. The Gorloks cut the deficit to three at 6-9 on a kill by Maggie Stanford as that was the closest margin Webster would achieve in this set. Both teams continued to fight back-and-forth as Eureka increased the deficit to six at 10-16. After a kill by WU's McGrath, the Red Devils opened the set with a 7-1 run that was snapped on a kill by White to the set score of 13-21. Eureka closed out the set with a 4-1 run that took the 2-1 set advantage. 

The Gorloks opened the fourth set with a 4-0 run that started on a service error by the Red Devils. Immediately following that point, Zablonski added back-to-back service aces as White capped it off with a kill. Eureka chipped back in the set with a 3-1 run that made the set 5-3. Moments later, the Gorloks countered with a 3-1 run of their own that included a kill by Elicia Theroff and a service ace by Morio to the 8-4 advantage. Both teams battled to the set-score of 12-7 that featured back-to-back kills by Stanford and White.

The Red Devils immediately responded with a 4-1 run that cut the lead down to two at 13-11 and later cut the same deficit at 15-13. 
The Gorloks found the momentum and increased the lead back to five at 19-14 with a 4-1 run that included kills from White, Theroff, and McGrath. Webster used a late set rally and closed out the set with a 6-2 run as Harms added the final point with a kill that sent the match to a fifth set.  
 
In the final set, the Gorloks jumped out to a 4-2 advantage that included kills by Jones and McGrath. The Red Devils tied the set a four apiece with consecutive points. Webster took the 7-6 advantage on a kill by Harms but Eureka took the 8-11 lead with a 5-1 run. The Gorloks added their final points of the match on back-to-back kills by McGrath but the Red Devils scored the final two points of the match. 

For the match, White and McGrath led the offensive attack with their first double-digit kill performances of the season by hammering down 13 kills. Defensively, four student-athletes recorded double-digit dig marks led by Jaycee Lewis with 21 as Morio, Harms, and McGrath each collected 11. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play this Saturday, September 21 with a road trip to Lyon College for a double-header starting with the host, Lyon at 10:00AM which will be followed by a match against Spalding University (Ky.) at 12:00PM in Batesville, Arkansas.
