Webster Volleyball Concludes Action At Lyon College Tri-Match

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Webster University volleyball team continued conference with a road visit to Lyon College for two matches. The Gorloks dropped both SLIAC matches on the day, first falling to Spalding University by the score of 1-3 and unfortunately dropped the second match to the host, Lyon in straight sets.

Match #1: Webster 1, Spalding 3

The Gorloks started the match in an early 1-3 deficit but immediately answered with a 4-0 run that started on a kill by Alyssa Jones. The run was capped off the run with back-to-back service aces that gave Webster the 5-3 advantage. 

For the middle portion of the set, both teams exchanged points to a one-point Spalding lead at 12-13. Spalding countered with a 5-0 run that made the set score 12-18. Webster chipped back in the set with a 4-0 run that cut the deficit down to two at 18-20. In the run, Jaycee Lewis contributed a service ace while Leah McGrath added back-to-back kills.

After a kill by SU's Jobi Smith, first-year Eva Tarlos started a 4-0 run with a kill as Webster took the lead at 22-21 on three consecutive errors by the Golden Eagles. Both teams battled back and forth to a tie at set-point 24 apiece. The Gorloks took the advantage on a kill by Jones but SU's Abigail Ratts tied it up at 25 with a kill. The Golden Eagles closed out the set with three consecutive points to take the early set advantage,

The second set opened up with both teams exchanging points to the set to a tie at five apiece. The Gorloks immediately countered with a 4-1 run which included a service ace by Lewis that gave Webster the 10-6 advantage.

The Gorloks kept battling with Spalding and retained that four-point advantage at the set-score of 14-10. Moments later, Webster added a 5-1 run that started on back-to-back kills by McGrath and Maggie Stanford that made the set score 19-12. 

After a pair of 2-0 runs by both teams, the Gorloks took the 23-16 lead on back-to-back kills by Jones and Tarlos. Webster scored the final two points of the set on a kill by Tarlos and an attacking error by SU's Brianna Terpening that even the match at one set apiece.   

The final set started off with more back-and-forth action as Gorloks took a one-point deficit at 4-5. The Golden Eagles countered with a 6-0 run that was snapped on a kill by Delaney Morio that made the set-score 4-11. 

Spalding stretched their lead out to nine at 6-15 before the Gorloks answered with a 7-1 run that included a kill by Delaney Fullenkamp and a service ace by Megan Zablonski. Both teams exchanged 4-0 and 2-0 runs that made the set-score 19-22. However, the Golden Eagles scored the final two points of the set that took the 2-1 set advantage. 

The fourth set opened up with a 4-1 Gorlok advantage that included two kills by Tarlos while Jones and McGrath added one kill each. Both teams continued to rally back-and-forth as Webster kept the three-point advantage at 9-6. However, the Golden Eagles countered with a 6-0 run that gave the Gorloks a three-point deficit at 9-12. 

Moments later, Spalding increased their lead to 18-12 with a 6-1 run that eventually snapped on a kill by McGrath. Late in the set, the Gorloks chipped back and tied the set at 22 apiece with a 5-0 run that started on a kill by Zablonshi which was capped off with a kill by Tarlos. Both teams exchanged points to a tie at 24 apiece. However, Spalding scored the final two points of the set that took the match. 

For the match, McGrath and Tarlos recorded double-digit kill marks with 13 and 11 respectively while Ellie Biedenstein recorded 21 assists. Defensively, Lewis led with 17 digs while Biendenstein and Zablonski collected 10 each.  


Match #2: Webster 0, Lyon 3

The Gorloks opened the match in an early 1-5 deficit but immediately answered with a 7-0 run that started on a kill by McGrath. In the run, Tarlos delivered two service aces while Jones capped it off with a kill that gave Webster the 8-5 lead.

Moments later, Lyon countered with a 3-0 run that tied the set at eight apiece. Both teams battled back-and-forth to the one-point Webster lead at 12-11.

The Scots opened the set up with a 7-0 run that was snapped on a kill by Tarlos that made the score 13-18. The Gorloks cut the deficit down to four at 17-21 but Lyon closed out the set with four consecutive points.  

Webster opened the set second with a 7-0 advantage led by the services of Biedenstein as Tarlos added two kills. The Gorloks and Scots rallied to a six-point Webster lead at 13-7. The Scots answered with a 4-0 run that cut the Gorlok lead down to two at 13-11. Webster immediately increased the lead back to five at 16-11 with a 3-0 run. Lyon chipped back in the set with a 5-1 run that cut the lead down to one at 17-16. The Gorloks led the Scots 20-17 until Lyon answered with seven straight points to set-point as Kylie Sabella ended the set with a kill. 

Webster and Lyon opened the final set exchanging points to a two-point Lyon advantage at 3-5. Moments later, the Gorloks answered with a 5-0 run that was started and ended on kills by McGrath for the 8-5 lead. 

However, the Scots countered with a 6-0 run that generated a three-point deficit at 8-11. Shortly later, Lyon increased their lead to 12-17 with a 5-1 run and added another 5-1 run that made the score 15-21. 

With a six-point deficit, the Gorloks erupted for an 8-0 run that took the 23-21 advantage. In the run, White added a kill as the other seven points came from Lyon errors. Immediately following the Lyon mistakes, the Scots rallied behind their home crowd and scored the four points of the match to defeat the Gorloks. 

For the match, McGrath led the offensive attack with seven kills while Grace White and Tarlos added four each. Defensively, Lewis and Zablonski tied with a team-high seven digs each as Jones added three blocks.

The Gorloks will travel across town to Washington University on Wednesday, September 25 for a non-conference decision starting at 7:00PM.
