Webster Volleyball Fall To WashU In Non-Conference Road Match

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University volleyball team continued non-conference play with a mid-week road contest at Washington University Wednesday night. The Gorloks battled the Bears and conquered a set victory in the third set but dropped the match by the final score of 1-3. 

The Gorloks and Bears opened the match exchanging kills as Eva Tarlos added the first two points for Webster with back-to-back kills. Webster and WashU battled back-and-forth to a tie at nine apiece. However, the Bears answered with a 6-1 run that made the set 10-15 as Megan Zablonski contributed the point with a kill. 

Late in the set, the Gorloks chipped back in the set with a 5-1 run that cut the deficit down to three at 18-21 as Zablonski added another kill. Webster was able to cut the deficit down to two at 21-23 but the Bears closed out the set to take the first set 25-21. 

WU's Zablonski started the second set with back-to-back points that included a kill and a service ace for the 2-0 advantage. Moments later, the Bears countered with a 10-0 run that was eventually snapped on a WashU attacking error. Shortly later, the Bears closed out the set with a 14-1 run as the point from Webster was a kill by Delaney Fullenkamp

The Gorloks jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the third set that included kills by Alyssa Jones and Biedenstein. The Bears chipped back and created a one-point deficit at 4-5. The Gorloks regained the lead with a 3-0 run that started on a kill by Jones and was capped off with back-to-back service aces by Delaney Morio that made the set score 7-4. 

Webster and WashU battled to a tie at nine apiece when the Gorloks answered with a 4-0 run for the 13-9 advantage. In the run, Lauren Harms contributed two kills while Jones added another kill to her total. 

The Gorloks and Bears exchanged points to a two-point advantage at 18-16. Moments later, Webster opened the set with a 5-0 run that made the score 23-17. In the run, Maggie Stanford and Harms each added a kill while Jaycee Lewis contributed back-to-back service aces. WU's Tarlos closed out the set and achieved set-victory by back-to-back points that included a kill and a block. 

The final set of the match began with a 3-2 advantage by the Gorloks. Immediately following a service ace by Tarlos, the Bears took the lead with a 6-0 run that was eventually snapped on a kill by Zablonski that made the set-score 4-8. 

The Gorloks and Bears battled back-and-forth to a five-point deficit at 7-12. Moments later, WashU increased the deficit to double-digits at 8-20. The Gorloks rallied late with a 7-1 run that included three service aces by Tarlos, a service ace by Morio, and kill by Leah McGrath. However, the Bears were too much for the Gorloks and took the match by the score of 3-1.

For the match, the Gorloks were led on the offensive attack by Jones with eight kills while Harms contributed six kills. In addition, Morio and Tarlos led with four service aces each while Biedenstein and Morio secured double-digit assist marks led by Biedenstein with 15 as Morio added 12. Defensively, Biendenstein and Jaycee Lewis collected double-digit dig marks as Biendenstein led with 14 as Lewis secured 11. 

The Gorloks will continue SLIAC play this Saturday, September 28 hosting the Webster University Tri-Match starting with Greenville University at 10:00 AM in Grant Gymnasium.
