Gorloks Secure First Conference Victory Of Season At Home Tri-Match

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University volleyball team hosted their first tri-match of the season with two conference matches against Greenville University and Lyon College on Saturday at Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks dropped the first match of the day to the Panthers but responded with a 3-1 victory over Lyon College for their first conference victory of the season. 

Match 1: Webster 1, Greenville 3

The Gorloks opened the first match of the day with back-to-back kills by Alyssa Jones that tied the set at three apiece. Webster and Greenville battled back-and-forth as the Gorloks took the 7-6 advantage on a kill by Grace White.

The Panthers and Gorloks proceeded to exchange 4-0 runs that gave the Gorloks the 11-10 lead. With a one-point deficit at 13-14, the Gorloks countered with another 4-0 run that included a service ace by Delaney Morio and a kill by Leah McGrath for the 18-13 advantage. 

Greenville cut the deficit down to two at 19-17 but Webster regained the four-point lead at 22-18 on a kill by Morio. The Gorloks closed out and scored the final three points that included an assisted block by Eva Tarlos and Jones.

The Panthers started the second set with an early 4-2 lead but the Gorloks regained the 7-4 lead with a 5-0 run that included kills by Jones and White. Both teams continued to battle and rallied the set to a 12-10 Webster advantage. However, Greenville took the 13-12 lead with a 4-0 run as a Panther attacking error tied the set at 13 apiece.

With the set knotted at 15 apiece, the Panthers answered with a 7-1 run that was eventually snapped on a kill by White to the five-point deficit at 17-22. The Gorloks responded with a 3-0 run on kills by Tarlos and Jones but Greenville tied the match at apiece on a kill by Mia deJesus.  

Webster and Greenville opened the third set exchanging points to a tie at three apiece. Moments later, the Panthers erupted for a 12-2 run as McGrath's kill cut the deficit down to nine at 6-15. Greenville took the double-digit advantage with a 3-1 run and kept that margain for the remainder of the set. The Gorloks earned points off two kills by Tarlos while Lauren Harms, Jones, and McGrath contributed one but dropped the set. 

The Panthers jumped out to a 11-2 lead in the final set that was eventually snapped on a kill by Jones. Moments later, Greenville unfortunately put the match away with a 14-5 run that took the match. 

For the match, the Gorloks were led offensively by Jones with seven kills while Tarlos and White contributed five each. Biedenstein led the team with 15 assists as Morio contributed seven. Defensively, Jaycee Lewis collected a game-high 20 digs as Biedenstein secured seven. 

Match 2: Webster 3, Lyon 1

The Gorloks opened the second match of the day with a 7-2 lead that included back-to-back points by Harms and kills by Jones, Tarlos, Megan Zablonski, and White. Both teams battled point-for-point as the Fighting Scots chipped back and cut the lead down to three at 14-11. 

However, Lyon countered with a 4-0 run that gave Webster the one-point deficit at 14-15. Late in the set, the Gorloks countered with a 4-0 run of their own that included back-to-back kills by Tarlos and Jones for the 21-18 advantage. Webster closed out the set and won the set with kills by Tarlos and Zablonski.    

The Gorloks started the second set with a 5-1 advantage that included three kills by Tarlos. The Fighting Scots chipped back in the set with a 7-2 run but a kill by mcGrath tied the set at eight apiece. 

With a two-point deficit at 10-12, the Gorloks erupted for a 13-2 run that started on a kill by McGrath. In the run, Jones added two kills while Harms, Tarlos, and Zablonski contributed one apiece. WU's White capped off the run with a block that generated the 23-14 lead. White gave the Gorloks the early two set advantage with a kill that ended the match. 

Webster opened the third set with an 8-3 advantage that included kills from Harms, Zablonski, and Jones. The Scots battled back in the set and cut the lead down to two at 12-10. Moments later, Lyon took the 14-13 lead with a 5-0 run that was snapped on a kill by Harms. 

The battle of runs continued as Webster responded with a 5-1 run to the 18-16 advantage that included kills by Lewis, Tarlos, White, and Zablonski. However, the Fighting Scots closed out the set with a 9-2 run that forced a fourth set.

The Gorloks jumped out to a 9-2 advantage in the final set that included five kills and two service aces by Biedenstein and Tarlos. Webster and Lyon battled back-and-forth to the same margin of seven at 18-11.  

Moments later, the Fighting Scots cut the lead down to two at 19-17 with a 6-1 run. The Gorloks immediately answered with a 3-0 run but it was eliminated with another 6-1 run by Lyon that tied the set at 23 apiece. Webster scored the final three points and closed out the match on kills by McGrath and Tarlos.  

For the match, Tarlos led the offensive unit with 14 kills while Zablonski contributed 10. Defensively, three student-athletes recorded double-digit dig marks led by Lewis with 21 as Harms collected 15 while Biedenstein secured 11. 

The Gorloks will continue SLIAC play with a road decision to Fontbonne University on Thursday, October 3rd starting at 7:00 PM in St. Louis, Missouri.
