Men’s Soccer Earn A Draw Against Principia In SLIAC Opener

ELSAH, Ill. - The Webster University men's soccer team opened St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (SLIAC) schedule with a visit to Principia Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks battled the Panthers to a 3-3 draw. First-year international student-athlete from Wales, Scott Price led the offensive attack with two goals.

Within the first two minutes of play, the Gorloks attacked the offensive side of the field that generated a corner kick. Seconds later, WU's Price sent in the corner kick to the near post as the ball went through a Panthers defender and the goalkeeper for a goal.

In the 12th and 18th minutes, Principia had separate chances to tie the match but WU's goalkeeper Luke Dillon made two fantastic saves. For the next 27 minutes of play, both teams battled between the endlines as the score remained 1-0.

The Panthers got their revenge in the 35th minute and evened the match at one apiece with a goal by Leander Linsler. Webster and Principia went into the halftime break all knotted at 1-1.

The Gorloks and Panthers battled back-and-forth midway through the second half and both teams recorded at least two shots toward the net. In the 67 minute, Webster constructed a great offensive drive toward the attacking box that resulted in a Principia penalty in the box. Seconds later, Price stepped up and sent a rocket to the back of the net for the 2-1 advantage.

Three minutes later, the Panthers countered with a strong offensive attack that resulted in a goal by Romero Deigo De Manuel that tied the match at two apiece. Shortly later, in the 79 minute, the Gorloks regained the lead with a goal by Hayden Hatley that was assisted by Oscar Solis. However, Principia tied the match at 3-3 in the 83rd minute with a goal by Eyasu Smieja that generated the final score.

For the match, the Gorloks blasted a total of 15 shots as Price recorded a team-high nine shots while Hatley blasted three. In net, Dillon recorded a total of four saves.

The Gorloks will continue SLIAC play with a home match on Wednesday, October 3 against Eureka College starting at 7:30 PM at WorldWide Technology Soccer Park.
