Men’s Soccer Secure First Victory Of Season With Second-Half Comeback Over Dominican

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster men's soccer team closed out a three-game homestand by hosting the Stars of Dominican University Saturday afternoon at WWT Soccer Park. The Gorloks flipped the momentum in the second half behind two goals by Talha Dizdarevic that led to a 2-1 victory. With the victory, Webster secures their first win of the 2024 season.

In the opening minutes of action, the Gorloks were faced with a strong offensive attack by Dominican when the Stars struck first on the scoreboard in the fourth minute with a goal by John Cronnelly. Four minutes later, WU's Scott Price had a great opportunity to tie that match but the Eagles goalkeeper made a fantastic save. The Gorloks held a strong defensive stance for the remainder of the half and kept the deficit at 0-1 at the halftime intermission.

Out of the halftime break, the matches became much more physical that resulted in fouls and yellow cards for both teams. In the 61st minute, WU's Price had another great chance for the back of the net when he blasted a shot that was just wide.

Shortly later in the 72nd minute, Dillon launched a deep kick to the attacking side when Dizdarevic collected the ball near the net and tied the game at one piece with a goal. Just over a minute later, Andy Mujezinovic won a header over the opponent that found the foot of Dizdarevic when turned and netted his second goal of the game that claimed 2-1 advantage for the Gorloks.

In the final 10 minutes of play, the Stars had multiple scoring opportunities with six shots as Dillon eliminated all the attempts that helped earn the victory.

For the match, Dizdarevic and Scott Price led with two shots on goal each while Luke Dillon collected eight saves.

The Gorloks will hit the road to Rockhurst University on Monday September 9 to face off against the Hawks with kickoff scheduled for 2:30 PM in Kansas City, Missouri.
