Women’s Soccer Off To Perfect 3-0 Start With Dominate Victory Over Benedictine

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's soccer team earned their third straight victory of the 2024 season in dominant fashion by defeating the Eagles of Benedictine University (IL) by the final score of 5-1 Saturday afternoon at WWT Soccer Park.

In the opening minutes of play, Webster's reigning 2023 SLIAC All-Conference goalkeeper in Courtney Haneline was pressured with two shot attempts by BU but saved both shots. On the first offensive drive by the Gorloks, Payton Montana opened the scoring as she found the back of the net that was assisted by Reyce Reller

Just under 10 minutes later in the 16th minute, WU's Riley Cappozzo increased the lead to 2-0 with a goal that was assisted by Montana as that goal by Cappozzo marks her first goal of the season. In the closing minute of the first half, Benedictine cut the deficit to one at 2-1 with a goal by Jocelyn Ybarra as that score stood to the halftime break.

On the ensuing second half kickoff, Webster's Mackenzie Sundhausen took the ball into the box and netted her first goal of the season that increased the lead to 3-1. In the 57th minute, the reigning 2023 SLIAC Newcomer of the Year Malaya Blakely netted her first goal of the season for the 4-1 lead. Less than a minute later, the SLIAC Offensive Player of the Week from last week in Grace Rodgers blasted a shot and stretched the net for her third goal of the season that generated the final score of 5-1.

For the match, the Gorloks outshot the Eagles 22-8 as five different student-athletes netted a goal. Webster's goalkeeper Haneline recorded three saves and earned her third victory of the season.

The Gorloks will close out this three-game homestand on Sunday September 8 hosting the Warriors of Hendrix College at 12:00 PM (noon) in Fenton, Missouri.
