WU’s Ugo Achieves Career High 20 Points In Dominant Road Victory Over Principia

ELSAH, Ill. - The Webster University men's basketball team continued conference play with a short road trip to Principia College Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks generated an early double-digit lead that led to a dominant 82-64 road victory over the Panthers. Three Gorloks achieved double-figures led by Justin Ugo with a new career-high 20 points while securing a team-high nine rebounds.

In the opening six minutes of play, Webster controlled both sides of the ball and jumped out to an early 16-1 advantage that included six quick points by Ugo. In addition to Ugo, Sebastian Reed got his night started with two baskets while Josh Luster contributed a layup. The run was capped off with points by Alpha Diallo and John Renken

Immediately following the Webster run, Principia responded with a 5-0 run that cut the lead down to six 10 at 16-6. The Gorloks and Panthers pushed the score to a Webster advantage at 20-12 that included consecutive baskets by Ugo. With less than seven minutes left in the first half, Principia countered with a 12-3 run that cut the Gorlok lead down to seven at 29-22 as Jonah Hibbert added a three-point basket. 

Moments later, the Gorloks increased their lead back to double-digits at 35-22 on back-to-back three-point baskets by Hibbert and Sykes II. Webster closed out the first half on a 7-0 run that included four points by Sykes II and three points by Reed that generated a halftime score of 42-23. 

Webster and Principia opened the second half exchanging baskets that included baskets by Ugo and Sykes II that pushed the score to 46-28. Moments later, the Panthers responded with a 7-0 run that cut the lead down to 11 at 46-35. Less than a minute later, the Gorloks countered with a 7-0 run of their own that generated the score to 53-35. In the run, Diallo contributed three points while Ugo and Reed cashed in on layups. 

Midway through the second half, the Gorloks erupted for a 13-3 run that increased their lead to 25 at 71-46. In the run, Reed contributed four points while Diallo knocked down a deep three-point basket. In addition, Gabe Mccrary cashed in on a fastbreak layup while Sykes II capped off the run with a three-point basket. For the final seven minutes of regulation, Webster and Principia traded baskets as Jalen Davis and Andrew Hall contributed a basket each.

In addition to Ugo, Reed contributed 17 points as Sykes II added 12 points while shooting three-of-five from behind the arc. As a team, the Gorloks shot 47.9 percent from the field that included 22 fast break points. 

The Gorloks will conclude a two-game road stand with a visit to Blackburn College on Wednesday, January 22 starting at 7:30PM in Carlinville, Illinois.
