EUREKA, Ill. - The Webster University men's soccer team opened conference play with a 4-0 shutout victory over Eureka College on Wednesday. The Gorloks took the early lead behind a goal by Alberto Duque Gonzalez and scored three second half goals that led to the win. First-years Juan Ignacio Martins Ferreira and
Blake Cain scored their first career goals. With the victory, Webster improves to 3-4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
As a team, the Gorloks set the four new season-highs which included 10 points, four goals scored, 31 shots, and 14 shots on goal.
On the starting kickoff, Webster advanced the ball in the attacking zone that resulted in a shot by Ignacio Martins Ferreira but it went out high. Less than four minutes later,
Scott Price ripped a shot toward the net that earned a corner kick but no shot was found on the attempt. Shortly later, in the 11th minute, the Gorloks had two great scoring chances; the first shot by
Marcos Gonzales-Collado hit the crossbar and the second attempt by
Elias Ibanez-Silva went out right.
Moments later, in the 13th minute, the Gorloks constructed another counter attack which resulted in a shot on goal by Price as his shot was mishandled by EC's goalkeeper Sebastian Torres when Duque Gonzalez was in the right spot and netted the close-range goal.
Midway through the half, the Gorloks added two scoring opportunities behind the legs of Price and Duque Gonzalez but both attempts missed wide. In the 28th minute, senior captain Ian Meyer recorded his first shot and first shot on goal but it was saved by Torres. Less than five minutes later, in the 36th minute, Hayden Hatley had a goal-scoring opportunity but his was saved by Torres.
In the 37th and 39th minutes, Duque Gonzalez had two fantastic looks at the goal but both attempts hit the crossbar. Late in the 39th minute, the Red Devils responded with a counter attack that resulted in a save by goalkeeper Luke Dillon. For the final five minutes of the first half, both teams battled back-and-forth that led to a 1-0 halftime lead.
The Gorloks opened the second with the same offensive aggressiveness and blasted six shots that spanned to the 56th minute. During that span, Price recorded three shots while Gonzalez-Collado had two shots on goal as Duque Gonzalez put a shot on goal but the score remained 1-0.
Shortly later, in the 61st minute, the Gorloks added another attack that resulted in a goal by Price for the 2-0 lead which was assisted by Duque Gonzalez. Just over seven minutes later, in the 68th minute, Webster sent the ball back into the attacking zone when Ignacio Martins Ferreira scored his first goal of the season for the 3-0 lead which was assisted by Price.
For the nearly the next 20 minutes of play, Webster and Eureka battled between the endlines with scoreless play. In the 85th minute, Cain collected the ball on the wing and dribbled toward the box and blasted a shot in the back of the net for his first goal of the season which generated the final score.
For the match, the Gorloks outshot the Red Devils 31-7 which included 14 shots on goal. Price led the attack with eight shots while Duque Gonzalez contributed six as Ignacio Martins Ferreira and Gonzalez-Collado recorded five each.
The Gorloks will continue conference play on Saturday, October 4 with a visit to Greenville University starting at 1:00PM in Greenville, Illinois.
