Men’s Soccer Suffer First Conference Loss To Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University men's soccer team continued conference play with a road match at Greenville University Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks battled the Panthers but suffered their first conference loss of the season by the score of 2-3. WU's Alberto Duque Gonzalez and Scott Price netted a goal each in this match. With the defeat, Webster moves to 3-5-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Webster and Greenville opened the match with back-and-forth action as the Gorloks recorded the first shots of the contest. In the third minute, the Gorloks were awarded a free kick approximately between the 18-yard box and midline. Moments later, Duque Gonzalez sent the ball toward the right post when Price hit the right post and deflected off GU's goalkeeper for a corner kick. On the kick, Marcos Gonzales-Collado took a shot but went wide.

Shortly later, in the 15th minute, the Panthers added a countered attack that resulted in a save by Luke Dillon. Less than two minutes later, Greenville was awarded a corner kick when the ball was batted around when the Panthers took the early 1-0 lead. Just eight minutes later, in the 24th minute, the Gorloks orchestrated another offensive attack when Elias Ibanez-Silva sent a through ball to Duque Gonzalez in the box. Without hesitation, Duque Gonzalez ripped a shot to the far post that beat the GU's goalkeeper that tied the match.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Panthers responded with a counter attack that resulted in a goal for the 1-2 deficit. Both teams continued the match with back-and-forth play that included a scoring opportunity by Elmin Lemes but was saved. For the remainder of the first half, Webster defended off two corner kicks while first-year Blake Cain added a shot but took the one-goal deficit into halftime.

In the opening two minutes of the second half, the Gorloks constructed an attack that resulted in a shot on goal by Price but it was saved. Moments later, Webster was awarded a free kick approximately 20 yards outside the box when Duque Gonzalez ripped the shot just over the top crossbar. Less than three minutes later and in the 52nd minute, Greenville answered with a goal that made the score 1-3.

For the next 15 minutes of play, both teams battled back-and-forth between the endlines as Webster added three shots; one by Price and two by Juan Ignacio Martins Ferreira which both were saved. Shortly later, in the 68th minute, the Gorloks added another attack when Price did a give-and-go with Duque Gonzalez the left side upper box when Price took a couple dribbles and ripped a shot to the right post and past the GU goalkeeper for the goal that made the score 2-3. Less than a minute later, Price sent a long ball to Duque Gonzalez in the attacking zone when Duque Gonzalez had a great scoring opportunity but the shot was saved.

In the span of the 78th and 80th minutes, the Gorloks added four shots; two by Duque Gonzalez and one each by Hayden Hatley and Price but Duque Gonzalez attempts were on goal and saved. In the final minutes of play, the Gorloks had a late offensive push with shots by Price and Duque Gonzalez but both attempts went out wide.

For the match, it was a pretty even match across the team stats as Webster added one more shot and while capturing one less save than the Panthers. Duque Gonzalez and Price led the team with six shots each while Ignacio Martins Ferreira recorded two shots. In net, Dillon recorded five saves.

The Gorloks will start a three-game conference homestand on Wednesday, October 8 hosting Westminster College at 7:30PM in Fenton, Missouri.
