Smith Records First Career Hat Trick In 10-1 Rout Over Eureka

EUREKA, Ill. - The Webster University women's soccer team opened conference play with a dominant 10-1 victory over Eureka College on Wednesday. WU's Mia Smith recorded her first career hat trick while Malaya Blakely, Payton Montana, and Elin Nilsson scored two goals each. With the victory, Webster improves to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. 

In the opening minutes of the match, the Gorloks set the tone early on the offensive side of the pitch with two quick shots by Mayrin Soto but both attempts missed high. In the fourth minute, Smith got her career-night started with a goal which was assisted by Blakely. For the next five minutes of action, Webster added three shots on goal that included two by Blakely and one by Nilsson but all attempts were saved by EC's goalkeeper Naitzy Garcia.

Shortly later, in the 11th minute, the Gorloks answered with a counter attack that resulted in a goal by Smith which was assisted by Payton Harting. Just over a minute later, Webster sent the ball back into the attacking zone when Soto ripped a shot past Garcia for the goal as Nilsson was credited with the assist. In the span of 33 seconds, the Gorloks added another attack when Blakely ripped the back of the net that made the score 4-0. Less than five minutes later, in the 17th minute, Webster constructed another offensive attack that resulted in the second goal of the match by Blakely which was assisted by Montana. With those goals by Blakely, it marks her second consecutive game with two goals scored.  

Midway through the first half, the Gorloks orchestrated another fantastic counter attack when Montana got her revenge against Garcia and found the back of the net as Sienna Inouye was credited with the assist. Ten minutes later, in the 33rd minute, Webster cracked Eureka's defense again when Montana netted her second goal of the match which was assisted by Gemma Bowers for the 7-0 lead. 

In the final minutes of the first half, the Gorloks pressured the Red Devils defense when Nilsson ripped the back of the net for the eighth goal of the match as Bowers was credited with the assist. With the assists, Bowers set a collegiate career-high and her first two of the season. The Gorloks went into halftime with the 8-0 advantage.    

Webster came out in the second half with the same offensive aggressiveness and added three shots in the first three minutes ; one by Bowers that hit the crossbar and two by Lorelli Barajas. In the span of the 50th and 60th minutes, the Gorloks recorded three shots which included one shot each from Blakely, Smith, and Soto. 

Following two corner kicks by Webster, and in the 64th minute, the Gorloks kept the ball into the attacking territory that resulted in a goal by Nilsson for her second of the match. With that second goal by Nilsson, it marks her second straight game of scoring two goals. Less than five minutes later, in the 68th minute, Smith captured the hat trick and closed out the scoring for the match with a goal which was assisted by Blakely. 

For the match, Webster recorded a total of 29 shots (17 on goal) led by Smith with six while Blakely and Soto contributed five each. In addition, Bowers and Blakely recorded two assists each while four other Gorloks were credited with one assist each. 


The Gorloks will continue conference play this Saturday, October 4th with a road visit to Greenville University starting at 3:00PM in Greenville, Illinois.
