Women’s Soccer Fall Short To Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University women's soccer team closed out a two-game conference roadstand with a visit to Greenville University on Saturday. The Gorloks battled the Panthers but fell short by the final score of 1-5. With the defeat, Webster moves to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

In the opening five minutes of play, Greenville pressured the Gorloks defense and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Six minutes later, in the 11th minute, Webster added a counter attack that resulted in a shot by Sofia Bosnos but it went out high. 

Midway through the half, the Gorloks attacked the Panther defense that resulted in a shot by Malaya Blakely but went out left. Moments later, in the 24th minute, Greenville added a goal that made the score 0-3. 

In the 37th minute, Webster responded with an attack when Gemma Bowers sent a ball into the box when Elin Nilsson was fouled that resulted in a penalty kick. Moments later, Mia Smith stepped up and froze the GU goalkeeper with a left-footed shot toward the left side of the net for the goal which made the score 1-3. In the final five minutes of the half, Greenville added a goal and took the 1-4 lead to the halftime break. 

The Panthers opened the second half with two shots in the 49th and 51st minutes as both attempts went wide. Moments later, the Gorloks added another offensive attack which resulted in a shot by Bosnos but went out. Shortly later, in the 70th minute, Greenville added their final goal of the match.

For the remainder of the match, the Gorloks added four shots that included two from Smith and one each from Mayrin Soto and Payton Montana but neither attempts found the back of the net that generated the final score. 

For the match, Smith led the attack with three shots while Bosnos and Blakely contributed two each. In net, Courtney Haneline recorded six saves.

The Gorloks will open a three-match homestand on Wednesday, October 8 hosting the Bluejays of Westminster College at 5:30PM in Fenton, Missouri.
