Gorloks Fall Twice At Blackburn College Tri-Match

CARLINVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University volleyball team reverted back to conference play by participating in the Blackburn College Tri-Match on Saturday. Webster battled hard in the doubleheader but dropped both matches; 1-3 to Greenville and 2-3 to Blackburn College. With the defeats, Webster moves to 3-5 in conference play. 

Match #1: Webster 1, Greenville 3
Webster opened the match in an early 0-3 deficit but responded with an 8-1 run that took the 8-4 advantage. In the run, Grace White and Megan Zablonski added a kill each while teaming up for an assisted block. In addition, Eva Tarlos and Zablonski recorded back-to-back solo blocks when Tyler Ramstack and Tarlos followed up with an assisted block. The run was capped off with a service ace by Maddie Bock. Shortly later, the Panthers added a 7-4 run that cut the Gorloks lead to one at 12-11. 

The set continued with back-and-forth play that included kills by Riley Watson, Zablonski, Ramstack, and two kills by Delaney Fullenkamp that pushed the score to 19-18. Late in the set, the Gorloks added a 5-2 run that started on a kill by White. Moments later, Ramstack and White paired up for an assisted block. The run was capped off with back-to-back kills by White and Zablonski that achieved set-point at 24-20. Following a point by Greenville, Tarlos closed out the set with a kill that gave the Gorloks the 1-0 set lead. 

The Gorloks and Panthers opened the second with back-and-forth play to a tie at three apiece. Shortly later, Greenville constructed a 5-1 run that generated a 4-8 deficit. Moments later, Webster chipped back with a 4-0 run that included two kills by Lauren Harms and one by Fullenkamp that tied the set at eight apiece. With the set tied, the Panthers closed out the set with a 17-6 run as three of Webster's points came from kills by Ramstack, Zablonski, and Fullenkamp that evened the match at one apiece. 

The Panthers opened the third set with a 6-0 advantage when Ramstack hammered down back-to-back kills. Following those kills, Greenville added a 5-1 run that generated the 3-11 deficit. Moments later, the Gorloks responded with a 7-2 run that started on a kill by Ramstack. Shortly later in the run, Webster added two assisted blocks from the duos of Delaney Morio and Tarlos, and Fullenkamp and Tarlos. The run was capped off with consecutive set errors by Greenville that pushed the deficit to three at 10-13.

Immediately following the Webster run, Greenville increased the deficit to 10-18 with a 5-0 run. The game of run continued as the Gorloks chipped back and cut the deficit to 19-21 with a 9-3 run. In the run, White and Tarlos contributed two kills each while Ramstack added one. In addition, Lauren Peterson laid down back-to-back service aces while Watson added one. The run was capped off with an assisted block by Fullenkamp and Tarlos. However, the Panthers closed out the set with a 4-0 run that generated a one-set deficit. 

Webster and Greenville opened the fourth set with back-and-forth play to a tie at three apiece. With the set tied, the Gorloks took the 5-3 advantage on a kill by Tarlos and an assisted block by Harms and Tarlos. Moments later, the Panthers responded with a 14-1 run that pushed the score to 6-17 that included a kill by Harms. Following that run, the Gorloks added a 5-2 run which included a kill by Zablonski to the score of 11-19. However, Greenville closed out the set with a 6-1 run that took the match.  

For the match, Zablonski recorded a team-high seven kills while Ramstack and White contributed six each. Setters Watson and Delaney Morio dished out a total of 24 assists led by Watson with 16. At the net, Tarlos recorded a season-high seven blocks which included six assisted blocks. 

Match #2: Webster 2, Blackburn 3
Webster and Blackburn opened the match exchanging points that included a kill by Zablonski. With the set tied at two apiece, the Gorloks added a 5-0 run that took the 7-2 advantage. In the run, Zablonski, Tarlos, and Harms added a kill each while Morio capped off the run with a service ace. Moments later, Blackburn chipped back with a 7-3 run that cut the lead to one at 10-9. Following the run, the Gorloks added consecutive points to the score of 12-9 that included a kill by White and a service ace by Harms. Immediately following those points by Webster, Blackburn countered with a 7-3 run and took the 16-15 lead. 

The Gorloks countered back with three consecutive and took the 18-16 advantage that included kills by Zablonski and Fullenkamp. Late in the set, the Beavers added a 6-2 run and took the 22-20 lead. Moments later, Webster tied the set at 22 apiece on kills from Harms and Ramstack. However, Blackburn closed out the set with three unanswered points that took a 1-0 set advantage. 

Webster opened the second set with the early 9-3 advantage that included three kills by Ramstack, two service aces by Bock, and was capped off with an assisted block by Tarlos and Zablonski. Moments later, Blackburn added a 5-1 run that cut the lead to 10-8. Following a 3-1 run by Webster that included a service ace by Peterson, the Beavers constructed a 6-2 run that tied the set at 14 apiece.

With the set tied, the Gorloks countered with an 8-3 run that included two kills by Carley Hersberger, a kill by Harms, and five errors by Blackburn for the 22-17 lead. The Beavers followed up with three consecutive points that pushed the score to 22-20. Moments later, Tarlos got the Gorloks to set-point with consecutive kills as an attacking error by Blackburn generated the 25-22 set victory.  

The Gorloks and Beavers opened the third set trading points to a tie at two apiece that included kills by Harms and White. Moments later, Blackburn responded with a 10-1 run that generated the 3-12 deficit. The set continued with back-and-forth play as both teams rallied the score to 9-17. However, the Beavers closed out the set with a 8-1 run for the 2-1 set advantage. 
Webster opened the fourth set with six unanswered points that included an assisted block by Harms and White, a kill by Harms, and four consecutive service aces by Brynn Peloquin. Moments later, Blackburn countered with a 6-1 run to the score of 7-6. 

With the one-point advantage, the Gorloks stretched their lead to 18-9 with an 11-3. In the run, Zablonski and Harms contributed three kills each while Bock added a service ace. The run was capped off with a kill by Hersberger. Following the Gorlok run, the Beavers added a 3-0 run that made the score 18-12. Immediately following the BC run, Webster added a 5-1 run to the score 23-13 that included back-to-back kills by Harms and was capped off with two kills by White. Webster scored the final two points of the set on a kill each from Zablonski and Tarlos that forced a fifth set.

Webster and Blackburn opened the final set with back-and-forth play to a tie at five apiece. In that stretch of points, Hersberger added two kills while Zablonski contributed one. With the set tied, the Beavers added five unanswered points that generated the 5-10 deficit. Moments later, the Gorloks chipped back with a 5-3 run and cut the deficit to 10-13. In the run, Leah McGrath contributed two kills while Tarlos and Harms added one kill. However, Blackburn added back-to-back points that generated the loss. 

For the match, Harms led the attack with a career-high 12 kills while Ramstack and Zablonski contributed eight each. Three Gorloks setters in Morio, Watson, and Peloquin achieved double-digit assist marks led by Morio with 19 while Watson dished out 14. Peloquin recorded 11 assists while recording a career-high four service aces. Defensively, three Gorloks achieved double-digit dig marks led by Harms with 15 while Zablonski collected 12 as Watson secured 11. At the net, Tarlos led with three blocks while Harms and White had two blocks each.
