Watson Secures Season-High 26 Assists In Defeat To Fighting Scots

MONMOUTH, Ill. - The Webster University volleyball team closed out a two-game roadstand with a match at Monmouth College. WU's Riley Watson secured a season-high 26 assists in the 1-3 defeat to the Fighting Scots. With the defeat, Webster moves to 7-13 overall. 

Webster opened the match scoring the first two points that included an assisted block by Tyler Ramstack and Grace White before Monmouth added a 3-0 to the score of 2-3. Moments later, the Gorloks responded with a 6-1 run for the 8-4 lead that included two kills by Megan Zablonski and one kill by Ramstack. Immediately following the Webster run, Monmouth countered with a 5-1 run that tied the set at nine apiece. The set continued with both teams trading 2-0 runs to the tie at 13 apiece.  

In the middle of the set, the Gorloks added a 4-1 run that took the 17-14 lead. In the run, White recorded two kills while Delaney Fullenkamp and Watson added one kill each. With a one-point lead at 17-16, Webster closed out the set with a 8-2 run that included four kills; two from Zablonski and one each from Ramstack and Eva Tarlos. In addition, Maddie Bock recorded two service aces. 

The Fighting Scots opened the second set with the early 10-4 as the Gorloks added four kills; Lauren Harms, Ramstack, White, and Tarlos. Moments later, Monmouth added a 7-1 run that made the score 5-12. The set continued with back-and-forth play as both teams rallied the set to the score of 11-17. Moments later, the Gorloks cut the deficit down to three at 15-18 with a 4-1 run that included two kills by Zablonski and one by Tarlos. However, Monmouth closed out the set with a 7-1 run that evened the match at one apiece. 

Webster opened the third set with the early 4-1 lead that included two kills by White and one each from Harms and Ramstack. The set continued with both teams battling back-and-forth as the set rallied to a Gorlok advantage at 10-7. Moments later, the Fighting Scots responded with a 8-2 run that took the 15-12 lead. Following that run, the Gorloks cut the deficit to one at 15-16 with kills from Zablonski and Maggie Stanford while Delaney Morio added a service ace. However, Monmouth closed out the set with a 9-1 run that took the set.
 
Monmouth opened the fourth set with the early 9-2 lead that included a kill by Zablonski. Moments later, Webster countered with an 8-1 run that tied the set at 10 apiece. In the run, Stanford and Zablonski added two kills each while Morio contributed a kill. Following the Webster run, Monmouth recorded a 5-2 that pushed the set to 12-15. 

With the three-point deficit, Fullenkamp recorded three consecutive kills that tied the set at 15 apiece. With the set tied, Monmouth countered with an 8-2 run to the score 17-23 which included kills by Fullenkamp and Carley Hersberger. Late in the set, the Gorloks cut the deficit to 20-23 that included a kill by Zablonski but the Fighting Scots added the final points that won the match. 

For the match, Zablonski recorded a game-high 16 kills as White contributed six as Ramstack had five kills. Watson and Morio eclipsed double-digit assists marks led by Watson with 26 while Morio had 13. Defensively, three student-athletes achieved double-digit dig marks led by Jaycee Lewis with 17 while Harms collected 12 as Watson secured 11. At the net, Ramstack and White had two blocks each.
