Nelson & Chartrand Lead Gorloks To 96-69 Victory Over Ozarks In Webster Tip-Off Classic Finale

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team closed their annual Webster Tip-Off Classic with a rematch decision against the University of the Ozarks Saturday afternoon in Grant Gym. Four Gorloks achieved double-figures in the dominant 96-69 victory over the Eagles. With the victory, Webster extended their undefeated streak to four games to a 4-0 overall record. 

Webster and the University of the Ozarks opened the game with back-and-forth action to a tie at eight apiece that included four points by Justin Ugo and layups by Charles Nelson and Jemard Sykes II. Moments later, the Gorloks recorded an 11-3 run that stretched their lead to 19-11. In the run, Ugo, Adam Painter, and Ethan Chartrand added a basket when Nelson capped off the run with five straight points by Nelson. The game continued with back-and-forth play to the score of 25-17 that included two baskets by Sebastian Reed and a lay-in by Sykes II.  

With nine minutes left in the first half, the Eagles countered with a 9-0 run and took the 26-25 lead. Immediately following the Eagles run, the Gorloks erupted for a 26-2 that eventually closed out the half. In the run, Chartrand led with 10 points while Nelson and Painter recorded five points each. In addition, Dallas Harding-Fair contributed four points while Colin DeBold capped off the run with a pair of free-throws that generated the 51-28 halftime lead.

The Eagles opened the second half with the first basket but the Gorloks countered with a 12-2 run that increased the lead to 63-32. In the run, Ugo and Nelson recorded four points each while Painter and Chartrand added two each. The game continued with both teams trading baskets to the score of 73-42 that included a pair of three-point baskets by Nelson and two baskets in the paint by Chartrand. 

Following a layup by Chartrand and a free-throw by DeBold, the Eagles added a 10-3 run to the score of 79-52 that included a three-point basket by William Burroughs V. Moments later, the Gorloks recorded a 5-2 run to the lead of 84-52 that included a layup by Reed and another three-point basket by Burroughs V. For the final seven minutes of play, the Gorloks scored 12 points that included 10 consecutive points by Jalen Davis while Jacob Schafer capped off the scoring with a pair of free-throws.

For the game, four Gorloks achieved double-figures led by Nelson with 22 points while Chartrand recorded a season-high of 20 points. WU's Davis had a season-high of 10 while Ugo added 10. Defensively, Painter led with eight rebounds while Nelson collected six. Chartrand and Sykes II recorded two blocks each while Nelson and Nkosi Constant had one each. 

As a team, Webster recorded season-highs of 96 points, 35 made field goals, 40 rebounds, 19 assists, 17-of-18 (94.4%) from the free-throw line, 12 steals, and six blocks. In addition, the Gorloks outscored the Eagles 48-22 with points in the paint, 16-7 in second chance opportunities, and scored 31 points off Eagles turnovers.

The Gorloks will open conference play on Tuesday, November 25 with a visit to Westminster College starting at 7:30PM in Fulton, Missouri.
