Smith’s Hat Trick, Adkins’ Clean Sheet Capture 5-0 Shutout Over Lyon; Gorloks Advance To SLIAC Semifinals Match

FENTON, Mo. - The Webster University women's soccer team opened the 2025 SLIAC Women's Soccer Tournament by hosting Lyon College for the quarterfinals match. WU's Mia Smith recorded a hat trick in the first half while Payton Montana and Lucy Elfrink added a second half goal each that led to a 5-0 shutout victory over Lyon. With the victory, Webster improves to 14-4 overall and advances to play Spalding University. 

Webster and Lyon opened this win-or-go home match with the Gorloks owning the attacking zone that included three corner kicks but no shot was found on either attempt. Moments later, in the seventh minute, Smith had her first great opportunity on goal but just missed left. In the next two minutes of play, Malaya Blakely blasted two shots toward the net as the first attempt missed wide right and the second was saved by Millie Beller. 

Less than two minutes later, in the 11th minute, Payton Harting sent a long ball into the box when Smith chipped the ball over Beller for the 1-0 lead. Just over four minutes later, the Gorloks recorded another attack when Smith blasted a left-footed strike in the back of the net from just outside the left side of the box for her second goal of the match and the 2-0 lead. 

For the next 20 minutes of action, Webster outshot Lyon 3-1 that included two by Montana and one by Blakely as all attempts missed wide. Moments later, in the 36th minute, the Gorloks added an attack that started on a through ball by Blakely to Smith when Smith ripped a left-footed strike to the right post and in the back of the net for the hat trick. With that hat trick, it marks her second hat trick of the season. For the remainder of the first half, the Gorloks added shots by Elfrink and Blakely but the score remained 3-0 at halftime. 

In the opening 10 minutes of the second half, the Gorloks kept the offensive aggressiveness elite and added four shots; two shots on goal by Sofia Bosnos (both were saved), and one each from Montana and Blakely but neither attempt past Stauffer. For the next 20 minutes of play, Webster and Lyon battled between the endlines with scoreless play. 

In the 81st minute, the Gorloks orchestrated another attack when Montana ripped a shot on goal as Montana netted the rebound shot that made the score 4-0. In the 88th minute, Kira Koningfeld-Mawer blasted a shot on goal which was saved but Elfrink netted the rebound shot which generated the final score.  

For the match, the Gorloks outshot 24-5 that included a shots on goal differential of 13-3. Smith led the team with seven shots that included four shots on goal. In addition to Smith, Montana recorded six shots while Blakely contributed five shots. In addition, Webster recorded nine corner kicks compared to one from Lyon. Goalkeeper Leia Adkins recorded three saves and her fourth shutout of the season. 

The Gorloks will continue SLIAC tournament play on Thursday, November 6th with a match against Spalding University starting at 7:30PM in Greenville, Illinois.
