Gorloks Suffer First Loss of Season To Millikin

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team opened a two-game homestand by hosting Millikin University Sunday afternoon in Grant Gym. The Gorloks delivered an inspiring second-half surge before ultimately falling 77-85 to the Big Blue for the first loss of the season. With the defeat, Webster moves to 5-1 overall on the season. 

In the opening minutes of play, Webster got into an early 0-7 deficit but Charles Nelson responded with back-to-back three-pointers that made the score 6-7. Moments later, Millikin recorded a 9-0 run that pushed the score to 6-16. The game continued with back-and-forth play to the score of 10-20 that included baskets by Sebastian Reed and Dallas Harding-Fair

With the ten-point deficit, the Gorloks chipped back with a 7-0 run to score of 17-20 on layups by Harding-Fair and Reed while Colin DeBold sank a three-pointer. Immediately following the Webster run, Millikin added five quick points that pushed the score to 17-25. Moments later, the Gorloks cut the deficit to 21-25 on baskets by Reed and William Burroughs V.

With seven minutes left to go in the first half, Millikin constructed a 15-0 run to the score of 21-40 that included three long-range baskets. Following the Big Blue run, the Gorloks added a 7-2 run on layups by Nelson and Reed and a three-pointer by Ethan Chartrand. In the final two minutes of the first half, Chartrand and Adam Painter added two points each that generated the 32-49 halftime deficit.  

Webster opened the second half with an 8-4 run to the score of 40-53 on a three-point basket from Nelson and Chartrand while Ugo netted a pair of free-throws. Between the minute markers of 16:39 to 6:36, the Gorloks and Big Blue traded baskets to the score of 58-75. In that span, Nelson led with five points while Harding-Fair, Ugo, and Jemard Sykes II added three points each while Burroughs V and Chartrand contributed a basket each. 

Following a basket by Millikin, Webster chipped back with a 10-4 run to the score of 68-79 that included five points by Nelson, a pair of free-throws by Harding-Fair, and was capped off with a three-point basket by Sykes II.

In the final two and half minutes of regulation, the Gorloks constructed a late 9-2 run that included four points by Nelson, three free-throws by Harding-Fair, and a basket by Reed but fell short that generated the final score.  

For the game, Nelson led the team with 25 points that included a team-high five three-pointers. In addition, Harding-Fair recorded a season-high 12 points which included six-of-eight from the free-throw line. Reed generated a season-high 10 points while Chartrand contributed 10 points. Burroughs V dished out a season-high and team-high four assists as Painter and Reed added three assists. 

At the glass, Ugo led with seven rebounds as Harding-Fair and Reed collected six rebounds each as that marks a season-high for Reed. Defensively, Chartrand and Ugo recorded two blocks each as Nelson added a block.

The Gorloks will play in their second conference game of the season on Wednesday, December 2 hosting Blackburn College at 7:30PM.
