Nelson’s Game-High 24 Points Propels Webster Past IC 70-64

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University men's basketball team closed out their non-conference schedule with a visit to Illinois College Tuesday evening. The Gorloks battled the Blueboys tightly and had clutch shooting in the final moments that earned a 70-64 victory. WU's Charles Nelson led all student-athletes with 24 points that included a perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line. With the victory, Webster improves to 9-2 overall and extends their win streak to three games. 

In the opening eight minutes of the game, the Gorloks jumped out an early 11-2 advantage that included five points by Nelson and baskets from Jemard Sykes II (dunk), Adam Painter, and Colin DeBold. Less than a minute later, IC recorded a 5-0 run that made that score 11-7. 

Approximately midway through the half, the Gorloks recorded a 10-0 run to the 21-7 advantage that started on back-to-back baskets by Sebastian Reed. Moments later, Kendall Horton cashed in on a lay-in as Nelson sank four free-throws. 

With under seven minutes to go, the Blueboys responded with a 10-5 run that pushed the score to 26-17 that included a basket each from Sykes II and Reed while Nbaye Thiam drained a free-throw. Webster and IC closed out the first half trading five points each that generated the 31-22 lead on a jumper by Reed, two free-throws by Jalen Davis, and one free-throw by Sykes II. 

The Blueboys opened the second half with a 14-6 run that pushed the score to 37-36 that included jumpers by Sykes II, Nelson, and Reed. Following a basket by Sykes II, IC responded with four quick points and took the 40-39 lead. 

Over the next minutes of play, Webster and IC traded points to the score of 47-50 which included four points by Sykes II while DeBold and Nelson added a basket. 

With seven and a half minutes to go, the Gorloks responded with a 10-2 run that generated the  57-52 advantage. In the run, Reed sank a jumper while Dallas Harding-Fair sank three consecutive free-throws. Nelson followed up with a three-point play by sinking the free-throw when Painter capped off the run with a jumper. 

Between the minute markers of 4:31-1:36, IC added an 11-6 run that tied the game at 63 apiece which included four points by Nelson and a basket by Painter. In the final minute and 15 seconds, Webster closed out the game with a 7-1 run that included four points by Nelson, a layup by Harding-Fair, and a free-throw by Painter that generated the victory. 

In addition to Nelson, Sykes II contributed 13 points while Reed added 12 points. Painter led the team with seven rebounds while Harding-Fair and Sykes II collected four each. As a team, Webster recorded 20 points off turnovers and outscored IC 19-5 in bench points. In addition, the Gorloks made a season-best 19 free-throws on 23 attempts.  

The Gorloks will revert back to conference play on Saturday, January 3 hosting Westminster College at 3:00PM in Grant Gym.
