Gorloks Fall To Griffins In Regular Season Finale

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team closed out the 2024-25 regular season with their final trip down Big Bend Blvd to Fontbonne University Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks battled the Griffins but fell by the final score of 86-67. Webster moves to 13-12 overall and 12-6 in conference play

In the opening minutes of play, Webster and Fontbonne exchanged baskets that included layups by Sebastian Reed and Jemard Sykes II. Moments later, both teams traded 5-0 runs that included four points by Sykes II that gave the Gorloks the 9-7 advantage. Less than a minute later, the Griffins countered with a 6-0 run that generated the deficit of 13-9. The game of runs continued as the Gorloks responded with a 5-0 run that started on a conventional three-point play by Justin Ugo. WU's Josh Luster capped off the run with a layup that gave Webster the 14-13 advantage. 

Following a three-point basket by Alpha Diallo that tied the game at 19 apiece, the Griffins responded with an 11-0 run that made the score 30-19. With less than seven minutes to go in the first half, the Gorloks cut the deficit to five at 30-25 with a 6-0 run. In the run, Reed connected on a three-point play when Karl Moore Jr. capped off the run with three straight points. With less than five minutes in the first half, the Griffins constructed an 11-2 run that included a basket by Will Burroughs that made the score 41-27. WU's Moore Jr closed out the first half scoring with back-to-back baskets that generated the halftime deficit of 47-34. 

Webster opened the second half with a free-throw by Moore Jr and a three-point basket by Sykes II that pushed the deficit to 53- 38. Moments later, Fontbonne responded with a 12-2 run that made the score 65-40. Midway through the second half, the Gorloks answered with a 7-2 run that included layups by Diallo, Reed and Ugo that cut the deficit to 67-47. Moments later, Webster countered with a 10-3 run that included layups by Diallo and Sykes II. WU's Jonah Hibbert capped off the run with a three-point basket that made the score 72-55.

In the final six minutes of play, Webster and Fontbonne traded baskets that included four points by Ugo. In addition, Diallo and Amarien Mohair each added a three-point basket before Andrew Hall capped off the scoring for the game with a layup.  


For the game, Diallo led the offensive attack with a new career-high of 14 points that included a pair of three-pointers. In addition, Sykes II contributed 11 points while Moore Jr, Reed, and Ugo added nine points apiece. Ugo led the team with eight rebounds while Moore Jr secured seven. 

The Gorloks have advanced to the SLIAC Tournament and will host the quarterfinals game on Wednesday, February 26 at 7:00PM in Grant Gymnasium.
