Gorloks Surpass Triple-Digits Led By Denbow’s Career-High 21 Points In Victory At Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a trip down Big Bend Blvd to Fontbonne University Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks eclipsed triple-digits for the third time this season and dismantled Fontbonne University by the final score of 102-52. With the victory, Webster improves to 23-2 overall and 17-1 in conference play. In addition, this victory secures co-champions of the 2024-25 SLIAC regular season and marks the sixth year in a row of being regular season champions. 

In the opening five minutes of this decision, the Gorloks jumped out to a 11-2 advantage that included seven quick points by Emily Wilson while Bethany Lancaster added two layups. Midway through the quarter, the Griffins constructed a 6-0 run that cut the lead down to three at 11-8. Webster closed out the opening quarter with a 16-0 run that started on back-to-back layups by Meghan Illingworth and Aleyna Sherman. Less than a minute later, Julie Diveney stretched the lead to 21-8 with back-to-back three-point baskets. WU's Rylee Denbow got her career day started with consecutive three-point baskets that increased the Gorloks lead to 27-8. 

Webster opened the second quarter with cone jumpers by Nysa Gilchrist and Wilson that made the score 31-8. Fontbonne followed up with an 8-2 run that made the score 33-16. Midway through the quarter, the Gorloks answered with a 14-4 run that started on another three-point basket by Diveney. Following baskets by Wilson and Diveney, WU's Denbow capped off the run and stretched the lead to 47-20 with back-to-back three-pointers.The Griffins closed out the first half with an 8-2 run as a mid-range jumper by Denbow gave Webster the 49-28 halftime advantage 

The Gorloks opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run that included four points by Wilson and a pair of free-throws by Lancaster that made the score 55-28.Following three free-throws by Fontbonne, Webster answered with a 10-0 run that started on back-to-back baskets by Wilson. Moments later, Lancaster and Illingworth added consecutive layups when Denbow knocked down a pair of free-throws that stretched the lead to 67-31. After a layup by the Griffins, the Gorloks closed out the quarter with a 12-4 run that started on a basket by Sherman. Moments later, Diveney made her fourth three-point of the game. WU's capped off the run with seven straight points that included a pair of three-point baskets that stretched the lead to 79-37.

Webster opened the final quarter with a 8-2 run with four points by Nysa Gilchrist and layups by Lancaster and Kaimyla Nolen that increased the lead to 87-39. Less than a minute later, the Griffins added a 7-0 run that made the score 87-45. Moments later, WU's Jayla Dixon recorded a basket when Khamryi Jordan followed up with her first three-point basket of the season that made the score 92-45. With less than three minutes to go, the Gorloks closed out the game with a 10-1 run that included six points by Dixon and baskets by Grace Hupp and Jordan. 

For the game, four Gorloks achieved double-figures led by Denbow's career-high of 21 points while shooting five-of-eight from behind the arc. In addition, Wilson contributed 20 points while shooting nine-of-11 from the field. WU's Diveney recorded 16 points while shooting four-of-six from behind the arc. Lancaster rounded out the double-figure scorers with her 12 points while securing a game-high 14 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season. WU's Dixon recorded a new career-high of eight points while Gilchrist contributed eight points.

As a team, Webster recorded a season-high of 64 rebounds and outscored Fontbonne 62-0 in bench points.

The Gorloks have secured a first-round bye in the SLIAC Tournament. Webster will play in the SLIAC semifinals game on Thursday, February 27 at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri.
