Gorloks Drop Non-Conference Decision To Benedictine

DECATUR, Ill. - The Webster University baseball team continued their non-conference schedule with a neutral site decision against Benedictine University Monday afternoon at Millikin University. The Gorloks fell to the Eagles by the final score of 0-5. 

Webster and Benedictine opened the first two innings scoreless led by starting pitching from Elijah Rompala-Matthews and CJ Jensik. In the bottom of the second, Rompala-Mathews got out of a bases-loaded jam with his first strikeout of the game which ended the inning. The Gorloks got a runner on base in each innings on walks drawn by Evan Evola and Karl Peters

In the bottom of the third inning, the Eagles responded with a three-run inning that took the advance. The Gorloks made their first pitching change to Cullen McBride as he closed out the inning with a strikeout.  

In the top of the fifth, R.J. LaRocco led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch. After a double-play, the Gorloks earned their fourth walk of the game on a walk drawn by Ben Stedman but was left on base. In the bottom half, McBride recorded his first scoreless inning of the game. 

In the top of the sixth, WU's Karl Peters recorded the first hit of the game with a lead off double down the left field line. Moments later, James Theodore reached base on a hit-by-pitch. After a tag up advancement to third by Peters, the Gorloks stranded both runners. 

WU's LaRocco led off the top of the seventh with a single and later advanced to second on a wild pitch but did not advance any further. In the bottom half, the Eagles responded with a two-run double by Kyle Campbell. WU's relief pitcher Joel Arsenault closed out the game on the mound without allowing a hit. 

For the game, the Gorloks recorded three hits that came from Peters, Evola, and LaRocco. On the mound, Rompala-Matthews pitched two and two-thirds and struck out two. McBride came out of relief and threw four complete innings and fanned two batters. Arsenault pitched an inning and a third while striking out one batter.  

The Gorloks will play in front of their home crowd for the first time this season at Grizzlies Ballpark on Friday, February 28 hosting the Titans of University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 3:00PM in Sauget, Illinois.
