Gorloks SLIAC Title Run Falls Short To Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University men's basketball team traveled back to Greenville University to face off against the Panthers for the SLIAC Championship. The Gorloks season came to a close in a hard-fought battle against the Panthers by the final score of 115-104.

In the opening two minutes of play, Webster got off to a slow start offensively that generated the early 2-8 deficit. Moments later, the Gorloks responded with a 5-2 run on layups by Jonah Hibbert and Booker Simmons while Sebastian Reed added a free-throw. At the 15:23 mark, Jemard Sykes II and Justin Ugo started a 6-0 run with back-to-back layups. WU's Ugo and Reed capped off the run with a free-throw each that took the 13-12 lead. 

For the next seven minutes of play, Webster and Greenville traded baskets as the Panthers took the 39-32 advantage. With under seven minutes to go in the first half, the Gorloks chipped back with a 10-3 run that started on a three-point basket by Jalen Davis. Following a dunk by Alpha Diallo, Hibbert knocked down a three-point basket. The run was capped off at the free-throw line as Sykes II and Diallo made one each that cut the deficit down to five at 47-42. Just over a minute later, the Panthers added a 7-1 run that made the score 54-43. Webster and Greenville closed out the first half trading baskets that led a 64-56 halftime deficit.

The Gorloks opened the second half with a 10-2 run that started on a three-point basket by Hibbert. Just over a minute later, Diallo and Josh Luster added consecutive layups when Hibbert tied the game at 66 apiece with another three-pointer. Moments later, the Panthers constructed a 16-4 run that pushed the score to 82-70.Midway through the second half, Webster and Greenville traded baskets that pushed the score to 99-87. Shortly later, the Panthers increased the deficit to 16 at 107-91.

With five minutes remaining on the clock, the Gorloks answered with a 10-1 run that started on back-to-back layups by Luster and Karl Moore Jr. After a pair of free-throws by Diallo and a layup by Ugo, Moore Jr cut the deficit down to 108-101 with a layup. However, the Panthers closed out the game with a 7-3 run that included a three-point basket by Diallo that generated the final score. 


For the game, five Gorloks achieved double-figures led by Diallo with his first double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Sykes II contributed 15 points while Hibbert added 13 points while shooting 3-of-3 from behind the arc. Ugo and Davis rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 and 10 points respectively. 

Following the game, Diallo and Sykes II were named to the SLIAC All-Tournament Team.
