Women’s Basketball Season Ends With SLIAC Tournament Finals Loss To Principia

FULTON, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team traveled back to Westminster College for the SLIAC Championship game against Principia College on Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks season came to a close on a buzzer-beater by the final score of 69-67. Webster ends the season with an overall record of 24-3 and 17-1 in conference play. 

In the opening minutes of play, Webster and Principia traded baskets as a three-point basket by Julie Diveney gave the Gorloks the 5-4 lead. Midway through the quarter, Emily Wilson started an 11-4 run with a conventional add-one play. On the following Gorlok possession, Diveney knocked down her second three-point basket of the game. WU's Bethany Lancaster added a lay-in when Diveney capped off the run with a mid-range jumper that put the Gorloks on top at 15-11. The Gorloks added the final points of the quarter at the free-throw line as Aleyna Sherman and Meghan Illingworth sank one each that pushed the score to 17-14. 

In the first six minutes of the second quarter, Webster and Principia exchanged baskets to the score of 22-19 that included a three-point basket by Sherman and another layup by Lancaster. At the 3:34 mark, Emily Kerce started a 9-1 run with a three-point basket. Moments later, Lancaster added back-to-back baskets in the paint when Wilson capped off the run with a jumper that stretched the lead to double-digits at 31-20. Principia's Brown closed out the first half scoring with a three-point basket that generated the halftime lead of 31-23. 
 
The Gorloks and Panthers opened the first five minutes of the third quarter with back-and-forth baskets as a three-point basket by Diveney generated the Gorlok lead of 43-33. Moments later, Principia closed out the quarter with an 11-2 run that cut the Webster lead down to one at 45-44. 

The Gorloks opened the final quarter with a 9-2 run that included five points by Lancaster and layups by Nysa Gilchrist and Kerce that increased the lead to 54-46. Midway through the quarter, the Panthers countered with a 15-3 run that generated the 63-60 deficit. With just under two minutes to go in regulation, Wilson tied the game at 63 apiece with a three-point play. 

With 31 seconds left on the clock, Lancaster knocked down a pair of free-throws that gave the Gorloks the 66-65 advantage. Seven seconds later, Wilson added a free-throw that made the score 67-65. Approximately 10 seconds later, Principia tied the game at 67 apiece. In the final seconds of regulation, Principia's Hannah Myers hit a buzzer-beating layup that ended the game. 

For the game, four Gorloks achieved double-figures led by Lancaster as she recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds in her final collegiate game. In addition, Wilson contributed 16 points and nine rebounds while Diveney and Kerce recorded 11 points apiece. 

Following the game, Sherman and Wilson were named to the SLIAC All-Tournament Team.
