Gorloks Secure Split With First Victory Of Season Over Monmouth In Florida

COCOA BEACH, Flor. - The Webster University softball team continued spring break play in the Sunshine State with a double-header against Baldwin-Wallace University and Monmouth College (IL) on Monday. The Gorloks dropped the decision against BWU by the final score of 0-8 but responded in the second game with their first victory of the season against the Fighting Scots by the final score of 11-7.  

Game 1: Webster 0, Baldwin-Wallace 8

Webster was the away time in this game and got off to a slow start offensively. In the bottom of the first, the Yellow Jackets sent all nine batters to the plate that resulted in a four-run inning.

In the second inning, starting pitcher Ainzley Hinz recorded her first scoreless inning of the game that kept the score at 0-4. In the top of the third, Aven Ragwar-Hayes recorded the first hit of the game for the Gorloks with a triple to right center. However, she did not advance any further. In the bottom of the third, BWU recorded four hits that produced three runs that made the score 0-7. 

In the top of the fourth, Cheyenne Dickens drew a walk and advanced to second on a single by Marah Schotz. The Gorloks offensive threat fell short as the Yellow Jackets turned a double-play that ended the inning. In the bottom frame, Adriana Rodriguez recorded her first scoreless inning in the circle that kept the score the same. 

In the top of the fifth, Skylar Zentner recorded the final hit of the game for the Gorloks with a double to left center. However, she was left stranded at second. In the bottom half, BMU added a run that ended the game. 

For the game, the Gorloks recorded three hits that came from Schotz, Zentner, and Ragwar-Hayes. On the mound, Hinz pitched 2.1 innings and recorded a strikeout while Rodriguez threw 1.2 innings and struck out three. Brie Hale pitched the final inning and saw four batters. 

Game 2: Webster 11, Monmouth 7

Webster was the home team in the nightcap decision as both teams traded four runs in the first inning. In the bottom of the first, Lili Work got the Gorloks going with a lead off single through the left side. Moments later, Work advanced to second on a single to center by Ragwar-Hayes. With runners on second and third, Work got the Gorloks on the board as she scored on a wild pitch that made the score 1-4. 

With one out, Schotz ripped an rbi single to left that scored Ragwar-Hayes that cut the deficit in half at 2-4. Shortly later, WU's Zentner and Rodriguez reached base on back-to-back walks. With two outs, Abigail Chandler reached base on an error by MC's third baseman that allowed Schotz and Rodriguez to score that tied the game at four apiece. 

In the top of the second, WU's Braidyn Burr recorded her first scoreless inning in the circle that included two strikeouts. In the bottom half, Work led off the inning with a double to left and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ragwar-Hayes. Moments later, Schotz reached base on a throwing error that allowed Work to score that put the Gorloks back on top at 5-4. With two outs, Zentner smashed an rbi double to right that scored Schotz that increased the lead to 6-4. 

In the top of the third, Burr shut down the Fighting Scots for her second straight scoreless inning. In the bottom of third, the Gorloks erupted for another four-run inning that started on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Ragwar-Hayes that scored Chandler that made the score 7-4. Moments later, Dickens laced a rbi single to center that scored Hale that pushed the lead to 8-4. The Gorloks loaded the bases for the second time in the inning as Ragwar-Hayes scored on a wild pitch that made the score 9-4. WU's Zentner capped off the scoring for the inning with a rbi single to center that scored Dickens for the 10-4 lead. 

In the top of the fourth, Burr got out of a bases-loaded jam with back-to-back ground outs for her third consecutive scoreless inning of the game. In the bottom half, Hale got the inning started as she reached on an error and advanced to second with a stolen base. Moments later, Work ripped a rbi single to right that scored Hale that increased the lead to 11-4. 

In the top of the fifth, the Fighting Scots responded with a three-run inning that included five hits and a throwing error by Webster that made the score 11-7. 

In the top of the sixth, Webster made a pitching change to Rodriguez as she recorded a scoreless inning that included a strikeout. In the top of the seventh, Rodriguez added another strikeout and closed out the game with a flyout to Chandler to center.   

For the game, Zentner went 3-of-4 that included a team-high two rbi's. In addition, Work went 4-of-5 that included a rbi. WU's Work, Ragwar-Hayes, Schotz, and Hale all scored twice. On the mound, Burr pitched five innings and struck out two while Rodriguez closed out the final two innings and struck out two batters. 

The Gorloks will have a day off on Tuesday and will resume spring break play on Wednesday, March 12 with a double-header starting against Emerson College starting at 10:00AM which will be followed with a decision against Wisconsin Lutheran College at 12:15PM. Both games are eastern time and will be played in Cocoa Beach, Florida.
