Greifelt’s Records Career High Nine Strikeouts; Gorloks Rally In Middle Innings For 6-4 Victory Over Lyons

AUBURNDALE, Flor. - The Webster University baseball team played their sixth game over spring break with a decision against Wheaton College of Masseschusetts on Friday. The Gorloks came back from a three-run early deficit with a four-run fifth inning that led to a 6-4 victory over Wheaton College (Mass). WU's Ryan Greifelt pitched 6.1 innings and recorded a career-high nine strikeouts. With the victory, the Gorloks extended their win streak to three games and improve to 9-5 overall. 

Webster was the home team in this game as Greifelt took the mound for his fourth start of the season. He recorded a scoreless inning that included a strikeout. In the top of the second, Greifelt struckout all three batters he faced which moved his strikeout total to four. 

In the top of the third, Greifelt got in a jam after back-to-back singles. Following a strikeout by Greifelt, the Lyons added the first run of the game on a double to right center for the 1-0 lead. Moments later, Wheaton increased the deficit to 3-0 with an rbi single that scored two runners. Greifelt got out of the inning with a strikeout which was his sixth of the game. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Cullen McBride got the inning started with a double down the left field line. After he advanced to third, Ryan Hartz drew a walk that put runners on the corners. With two outs, Cameron Hailstone singled through the left side that scored McBride for the first Gorlok run of the game. 

In the top of the fifth, Greifelt recorded his fourth scoreless inning of the game with three consecutive groundouts. In the bottom half, James Theodore got the inning started with a two-out single through the left side. Moments later, Evan Evola reached on an error by WC's center fielder that allowed Theodore to score that cut the deficit to one at 3-2. Following a stolen base by Evola and a hit-by-pitch drawn by McBride, R.J. LaRocco loaded the bases with an infield single. Hartz stepped in the box and cleared the bases with a three-run double down the left field line that put the Gorloks on top at 5-3.

After a scoreless sixth inning by both teams, Greifelt recorded his final strikeout of his outing for the first out of the inning. Moments later, Webster called upon reliever Joel Arsenault out of the bullpen. The first batter Arsenault faced hit a groundout to Ben Stedman at third that scored a run that made the score 5-4. 

In the top of the eighth, Arsenault struckout all three batters he faced that moved his strikeout total to four. In the bottom half, LaRocco led off the inning with a single to right center. Following a pitching change by Wheaton, LaRocco stole second and advanced to third on a single by Hartz. With runners in scoring position, Stedman executed a squeeze bunt that scored LaRocco which extended the lead to 6-4. 

In the top of the ninth, Arsenault recorded back-to-back groundouts and closed out the game with a strikeout for the save. 

For the game, Hartz recorded a career-high three hits and three rbi's. In addition, Theodore went 3-for-4 with three singles. WU's LaRocco recorded two hits and scored twice while Hailstone and Stedman drove in one each.

In addition to Greifelt, Arsenault closed out the final 2.2 innings and struck out five for his second save of the season. 

The Gorloks will close out spring break play tomorrow Saturday, March 15 with a decision against Milwaukee School of Engineering starting at 9:15AM eastern time in Winter Haven, Florida.
