Gorloks Baseball Splits With Owls In Mississippi

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Webster University baseball team continued conference play with a visit to Mississippi University for Women for a pair of games on Wednesday. The Gorloks extended their win streak to seven games with a 7-1 victory but fell in game two by the score of 2-6. WU's Evan Evola and R.J. LaRocco surpassed the 200th career hits milestone in the split. Webster moves to 13-6 overall and 3-1 in conference play.   

Game 1:  Webster 7, MUW 1

The Gorloks opened the day with the bats as James Theodore and Karl Peters got the inning started with back-to-back singles. With two outs, Cullen McBride ripped a rbi double to left center that scored Peters for the 1-0 lead. Moments later, LaRocco captured his 200th career hit with an rbi double down the left field line that scored McBride that capped off the two-run inning. 

WU's Elijah Rompala-Matthews took the mound for his sixth start of the season and recorded a scoreless inning that ended with a strikeout. In the bottom of the second, the Owls got runners in scoring position but Rompala-Matthews earned back-to-back strikeouts for his second scoreless inning of the game. 

In the top of the third, Peters got the inning started with a one-out walk. Moments later, Evan Evola smashed an rbi double to right that scored Peters and increased the lead to 3-0. In the bottom half, Rompala-Matthews had a quick inning that led to three flyouts to the outfield. 

In the top of the fourth, WU's Ryan Hartz stretched the Gorloks lead to 4-0 with a lead off solo home run over the left field wall. In the bottom frame, Rompala-Matthews recorded two strikeouts that increased his strikeout total to five. 

In the top of the fifth, Evola stretched the advantage to 5-0 with a lead off solo home run over the wall in right. In the bottom half, Rompala-Matthews stranded two Owls runners for his fifth consecutive scoreless inning of the game.

In the top of the sixth, WU's Jacob Charlson and Peters reached base by walks. With one out, Evola laced a two-run single to left that scored Charlson and Peters for the 6-0 lead. In the bottom half, Rompala-Matthews had a quick inning that included his final strikeout of the game. 

In the top of the seventh, LaRocco led off the inning with a walk and reached second on an out. With one out, Ben Stedman increased the lead to 7-0 with an rbi double down the right field line that scored LaRocco. In the bottom frame, following a hit-by-pitch issued by Rompala-Matthews,  Webster made their first pitching change of the game and called upon Wes Carter. Moments later, the Owls scored their first run of the game on a bases-loaded walk issued by Carter that made the score 7-1. Carter got out of the jam with no additional runs. 

In the bottom of the eighth, Carter struck out the first batter he saw for his first strikeout of the game. Moments later, the Owls loaded the bases that ended Carter's outing. Webster called upon McBride out of the bullpen as he got out of the jam with a flyout to LaRocco in left that ended the inning. In the bottom of the ninth, McBride shut the door with two groundouts and a flyout that extended the win streak to seven games. 
 
For the game, Evola led the team with four hits and three rbi's. In addition, LaRocco and Stedman recorded two hits and drove in one each. On the mound, Rompala-Matthews recorded a season-high six innings of work that included six strikeouts. Carter recorded two strikeouts as McBride recorded the final four outs of the game.


Game 2:  Webster 2, MUW 6

WU's Peters got the Gorloks started in the second game with a bunt single to third. Shortly later, Peters advanced to third on back-to-back free bases by McBride and LaRocco. With the bases loaded and two outs, Hartz drove in Peters that gave the Gorloks the 1-0 lead. In the bottom half, J.T. Miller took the mound for his second start of the season. In his opening inning, he recorded two strikeouts that led to a scoreless inning. 

In the bottom of the second, the Owls responded with a three-run inning that started with a lead off solo home run by Avery Benson. Moments later, MUW took the 2-1 lead with a bases-loaded walk issued by Miller. The Owls scored their final run of the inning on a 6-4-3 double-play that made the score 1-3. Miller got out of the inning with his third strikeout of the game. 

In the bottom of the third, Miller allowed a single that ended his outing. The Gorloks made their first pitching change of the game and called upon reliever Ethan Luzum. Moments later, the Owls stretched their lead to 1-4. In the bottom of the fourth, Webster called upon reliever Jack Wilson out of the bullpen. Shortly later, MUW increased their lead to 1-5 with an rbi single. In the fifth inning, Owls added a single-run that generated the score of 1-6. 

Following three scoreless innings by both teams, the Gorloks added a run in the ninth on a pinch-hit solo home run by Nick Schumacher that generated the final score. 

For the game, six different Gorloks recorded at least one hit while Hartz and Schumacher drove in one each. On the mound, the Gorloks used seven pitchers as Miller led with three strikeouts. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play this Friday, March 28 hosting Lyon College for a double-header starting at 10:30AM in Sauget, Illinois.
