Gorloks Fall To Grove City College In Spring Break Opener

DAVENPORT, Flor. - The Webster University baseball team opened spring break play at the 2025 RussMatt Central Florida Tournament in the sunshine state with a decision against Grove City College Friday afternoon. The Gorloks dropped this decision by the final score of 14-6 that included a 12-run sixth inning by the Wolverines. Webster moves to 5-4 overall on the season.   

Webster opened this game with the bats as Karl Peters led off the game with a walk and later advanced to second. Moments later, Peters advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by James Theodore. With one out, Evan Evola ripped a rbi single to left that scored Peters that took the 1-0 advantage. 

In the bottom of the first, the Wolverines tied the game at one apiece on a solo home run by Sam Bevin. WU's starting pitcher Carter Hunt eliminated the next three batters that included a strikeout that kept the game tied. 

In the top of the second, first-year Ryan Hartz led off the inning with a single to center. With one out, Dalton Groves legged out an infield single that advanced Hartz to second. The scoring opportunity was halted as both runners got stranded. In the bottom frame, Grove City got the inning started with a triple by Luke Vittone. Moments later, the Wolverines took the 2-1 lead on a sacrifice fly that scored Vittone. 

In the top of the third, the Gorloks responded with a three-run inning that started on a lead off walk by Theodore as he advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following a walk drawn by Evola, the Gorloks executed the double-steal as both runners advanced 90 feet. Moments later, Theodore scored on a wild pitch that tied the game at two apiece. With no outs, Cullen McBride ripped a rbi single to left that scored Evola that took the 3-2 advantage. The next batter in R.J. LaRocco followed up with an infield single. WU's Hartz capped off the inning scoring with a sacrifice bunt that scored McBride that increased the lead to 4-2. 

In the middle innings, Hunt recorded back-to-back scoreless innings that included two strikeouts that kept the score at 4-2.

In the top of the sixth, Peters led off the inning with a bunt single. Moments later, he stole second and advanced to third on a balk. WU's Theodore followed up with a two-run home run over the left field wall that increased the lead to 6-2. 

In the bottom of the sixth, the Wolverines erupted for a 12-run inning that included seven hits and two errors by the Gorloks. 

In the seventh and eighth innings, first-year reliever Jack Wilson recorded back-to-back scoreless innings and struck out two batters.  

For the game, Groves and Hartz led the team with two hits each as Theodore recorded a team-high two rbi's. On the mound, the Gorloks used five different pitchers as Hunt led with four strikeouts.  

The Gorloks will continue spring break play on Saturday, March 8 taking on the Buccaneers of Beloit College at 1:00PM eastern time in Winter Haven, Florida.
