Gorloks Take Down Buccaneers For First Victory In Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Flor. - The Webster University baseball team continued spring play with a decision against Beloit College Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks earned their first victory in Florida by defeating the Buccaneers by the final score of 6-4. 

Webster was the home team in this game as Elijah Rompala-Matthews earned his fourth start of the season. In the top of the first, he recorded a scoreless inning that included two strikeouts. In the bottom frame, WU's Karl Peters led off the inning with a single. With two out, Cullen McBride ripped a rbi double that scored Peters that took the 1-0 advantage. 

In the top of the second, the Buccaneers tied the game at one apiece on a rbi single by Blake Nelson. In the top of the third, Beloit added a single run on an rbi double by Aiden Wood that made the score 1-3. 

In the bottom of the third, WU's James Theodore got the inning started with a single. Moments later, Evan Evola launched a two-run home run that tied the game at three apiece. 

In the bottom of the fourth, WU's Ben Stedman got the inning started with a single and scored on a rbi triple by Peters that took the 4-3 advantage. With one out and runner on third, Theodore increased the lead to 5-3 with a sacrifice fly that scored Peters. 

In the top of the sixth, Rompala-Matthews retired the first batter he saw. Moments later, Webster made their first pitching change of the game and called up reliever Bauer Dalke. He got out of the inning with consecutive fly outs that kept the score at 5-3. 

In the top of the seventh, Dalke issued a walk that ended his outing. Webster called upon McBride. The Buccaneers added a run on a bases-loaded fielder's choice by Peters at shortstop that made the score 5-4.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Gorloks added their final run of the game off the bat of Peters that scored Ryan Hartz

In the top of the ninth, McBride shut the door on the Buccaneers that included a strikeout.

For the game, Evola and Peters each recorded two hits and drove in two each. WU's Theodore and McBride drove in one apiece.

On the mound, Rompala-Matthews pitched 5.1 innings and struck out eight. McBride closed out the final three innings and struck out three batters.

The Gorloks will continue action in Florida facing off against the second-ranked Seahawks of Salve Regina University starting at 10:00AM eastern time in Auburndale, Florida.
