Webster Softball Drops Two Games Against Greenville In Conference Opener

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University softball team opened conference play with a visit to Greenville University Tuesday evening. The Gorloks fell in both games to fall to 0-2 in conference play.  

Webster and Greenville opened game one scoreless through the first two innings led by starting pitchers Ainsley Hinz and Destiny Dunlap. In the bottom of the third, the Panthers recorded a two-run inning that generated the deficit of 0-2. 

In the top of the fourth, Webster got their first two base runners on base with back-to-back walks by Emma Bovaconti and Madi Stitchling but both runners were left stranded. In the bottom half, Webster made a pitching change as Stitchling took over in the circle. Moments later, Greenville added two runs with a rbi single and a sacrifice fly that made the score 0-4. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Stitchling recorded a strikeout that led to her first scoreless inning of the game. In the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers stretched the deficit to 0-6 with a two-run double. 

In the top of the seventh, Bovaconti led off the inning with a single to center and advanced to second on a single by Cheyenne Dickens. With two outs, Bovaconti and Dickens advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch. However, the Gorloks could not scratch a run with generated the final score.  

For the game, Bovaconti and Dickens recorded the only two hits of the game. On the mound, Hinz pitched three innings and struck out four. Stitching pitched three innings of relief and recorded two strikeouts. 

In the nightcap decision, the Panthers tallied a four-run inning that included four hits. In the top of the second, Stitchling led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Dickens. However, both runners did not advance any further as the inning ended. In the bottom half, Greenville added a two-run inning that made the score 0-6. 

In the top of the third, Aven Ragwar-Hayes led off the inning with a walk and reached second on a throwing error by Greenville. Moments later, Ragwar-Hayes and Brie Hale advanced to scoring positions but did not advance any further. 

In the bottom of the third, Webster made a pitching change and called upon Adriana Rodriguez. The first-year student-athlete recorded a strikeout that led to a scoreless inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Rodriguez added her second strikeout of the game and shutout the Panthers for the second straight inning.  In the top of the fifth, Hale recorded her first hit of the game with a lead off single to center but got out on a fielder's choice at second. With two outs, Stitchling laced a single to center for her hit of the game but was left stranded on bases that ended the game. 

For the game, four Gorloks recorded one hit each while Stitchling and Ragwar-Hayes drew a walk each. On the mound, Braidyn Burr pitched two innings and struck out one while Rodriguez closed out the final 2.1 innings and recorded two strikeouts. 

The Gorloks will play in front of their home crowd for the first time this season and continue conference play on Saturday, April 5 hosting Principia College at 1:00PM at St. Joseph's Academy in St. Louis, Missouri.
