Gorloks Softball Earn First Conference Victory Of Season In Split Against Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University softball team continued conference play by hosting Fontbonne University for their home opener Tuesday evening at St. Joseph's Academy. The Gorloks secured their first SLIAC victory of the season with a 11-10 victory that generated the split with the Griffins. 

Game 1: Webster 0, Fontbonne 9
Starting right-handed pitcher Braidyn Burr earned her sixth start of the season and recorded the first two outs of the first quickly that included a strikeout. With two outs, the Griffins generated back-to-back hits that took the early 1-0 advantage. In the bottom of the first, Alyssa Lyell led off the inning with a single but was stranded on first. Burr responded with back-to-back shutout innings of work that kept the deficit to a run. In the bottom of the third, Abigail Chandler ripped a lead off double to left but did not advance any further. 
 
In the top of the fifth, Fontbonne added a six-run inning on six hits that pushed the deficit to seven. In the bottom half, the Gorloks got their second runner in scoring position on back-to-back walks drawn by Chandler and Aven Ragwar-Hayes. Unfortunately, both runners did not advance any further.

In the top of the sixth, reliever Madi Stichling recorded her first scoreless inning that included two flyouts and a groundout. In the top of the seventh, the Griffins added a single-run on back-to-back hits that made the score 0-8 which generated the final score. 

For the game, Lyell recorded two hits while Chandler and Stichling added one each.  


Game 2: Webster 11, Fontbonne 10
Left-handed starting pitcher Ainsley Hinz took the circle for the seventh time this season and worked out of a first inning jam with a strikeout for a scoreless inning. In the bottom half, the Gorloks erupted for a nine-run inning that started on a rbi single by Stichling that scored Lyell for the 1-0 lead. With one out, Chandler laced a rbi single to center that scored Aurora Lomheim for the 2-0 advantage. With the bases loaded, Marah Schotz ripped a two-run single to left that stretched the lead to 4-0. 

Following two wild pitches and a walk drawn by Ragwar-Hayes that loaded the bases, Brie Hale laced a rbi single to right that scored Adriana Rodriguez that pushed the lead to 5-0. Moments later, Schotz scored on a wild pitch that made the score 6-0. With one out and the bases loaded, Lomheim drove in Ragwar-Hayes for the 7-0 advantage. With two outs, Stichling capped off the scoring for the inning with a two-run single to right that scored Hale and Lyell for the 9-0 lead.

In the top of the second, the Griffins added a single run on a bases loaded wild pitch issued by Hinz that made the score 9-1. In the bottom half, Rodriguez led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by Hale as Hale took second on the throw. With runners in scoring position, Lyell drove in Rodriguez on an infield single that made the score 10-1. With two outs and runners on the corners, Lomheim drove in Hale on a single to shortstop that increased the lead to 11-1. 

Following a scoreless third inning by both teams, the Griffins added a single run in the fourth on a throwing error that made the score 11-2. In the top of the fifth, Fontbonne chipped back in the game with a six-run inning that included four hits and two errors by Webster that made the score 11-8. 

In the top of the sixth, the Griffins scored two runs on two separate bases loaded wild pitches that made the score 11-10. In the top of the seventh, Rodriguez shut the door in the circle and recorded the final out of the game with a strikeout that secured Webster's first conference victory of the season.  

For the game, Stichling recorded two hits and recorded a team-high three rbi's. Lomheim and Schotz contributed two hits and drove in two each. In addition, Chandler, Hale and Lyell recorded one rbi each.  

 The Gorloks will continue SLIAC play on Saturday, April 12 with a visit to Lyon College for a doubleheader starting at 1:00PM in Batesville, Arkansas.
