Gorloks Capture Series Split Against Lyon With 9-1 Victory

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Webster University softball team continued conference play with a visit to Lyon College for a doubleheader on Saturday. The Gorloks secured the series split against the Scots with a massive 9-1 victory in the nightcap contest. WU's Hinz blasted first career home run while Braidyn Burr pitched a complete game and earned four strikeouts in game two

Game One: Webster 2, Lyon 6
Webster opened this doubleheader with the bats as Emma Bovaconti and Alyssa Lyell recorded back-to-back singles. With one out and following a stolen base by Lyell, Madi Stichling laced a single to left that advanced Lyell to third. With two away, Abigail Chandler gave the Gorloks the early 1-0 lead with an RBI single to center that scored Lyell. In the bottom half, Ainsley Hinz took the mound for her sixth start of the season and recorded a scoreless inning that included a strikeout. 

Following a scoreless second inning by both teams, Lyon responded with a three-run inning on two in the bottom of the third that made the score 1-3. In the fourth inning, Webster made a pitching change to Cheyenne Dickens as she recorded a strikeout and left a runner stranded that kept the game at 1-3. 

In the bottom of the sixth, the Fighting Scots added a three-run on four hits that made the score 1-6. In the final inning, the Gorloks added their final run of the game on an RBI single off the bat of Lyell that scored Brie Hale that generated the final score. 

For the game, Lyell led all student-athletes with three hits which secured her first three-hit game of the season. In addition, Stichling recorded two hits while Lyell and Chandler drove in one each. On the mound, Hinz and Dickens pitched three innings each and recorded one strikeout apiece. 

Game Two: Webster 9, Lyon 1  
The nightcap decision opened with a scoreless inning led by starting pitchers Braidyn Burr and Sydney Lasher. In the top of the second, first-year Adriana Rodriguez got the inning started with a walk and advanced to second. Moments later, Ainsley Hinz blasted her first career home run which was a two-run home run that gave the Gorloks the 2-0 advantage.

In the middle innings, it was a pitching duel between Burr and Lasher as both student-athletes retired six-in-a-row. In the top of the fifth, Chandler led off the inning with a double to left center as Hinz followed up with a walk. With one out, Prisha Nigam laced a rbi double to right that scored Chandler that pushed the lead to 3-0. WU's Emma Bovaconti followed up with a rbi single to left that scored Hinz and increased the lead to 4-0. In the bottom half, Burr added another strikeout that led to her fifth consecutive scoreless inning. In the sixth inning, Burr retired all three batters down in order that secured her sixth complete shutout inning. 

In the final inning, the Gorloks erupted for a five-run inning that started on a rbi single to left center that scored Hale for the 5-0 advantage. Following a single by Lyell, Stichling laced a rbi single that scored Bovaconti that made the score 6-0. Moments later, Dickens increased the lead to 8-0 with a two-run double down the left field line that scored Lyell and Stichling. Following a Lyon pitching change, Rodriguez ripped a RBI single to center that scored Dickens for the final run of the game. The Scots added a single-run in their at-bats that generated the final score.  

For the game, Bovacanti went 2-for-3 with two RBI's while Dicken drove in two. Hinz added two RBI's with a two-run homer. On the mound, Burr pitched a complete game and recorded four strikeouts and only four hits. 

The Gorloks will continue SLIAC play on Sunday, April 13 hosting Principia College starting at 1:00PM at St. Joseph's Academy in St. Louis, Missouri.
