Rodriguez Achieves Career High 13 Strikeouts; Hinz Records Career High Six RBI’s In Sweep Over Principia

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University softball team continued conference play by hosting Principia College for a doubleheader on Sunday. WU's Adriana Rodriguez pitched a complete game and recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts. Madi Stichling pitched a five-inning shutout while Ainsley Hinz recorded a career-high six RBI's in the nightcap that secured the sweep over Principia.  

Game One: Webster 2, Principia 1
First-year Rodriguez earned her first start in the circle for the season as she recorded the first out of the game with a strikeout. Following a walk issued by Rodriguez, the Panthers struck first on a rbi double by Avery Cobb for the 0-1 deficit. Rodriguez recorded her second strikeout of the game that ended the inning. In the bottom half, Stichling got the inning started with a two-out double to right field. Moments later, Cheyenne Dickens tied the game at 1-1 with an rbi double to right center that scored Stichling. 

In the top of the second, Rodriguez fanned two batters that increased her strikeout total to four. In the top of the third, she stranded two Panthers on bases with a pair of strikeouts that kept the game tied. In the fourth, she added a strikeout that increased her strikeout total to seven. 

In the fifth, Rodriguez left two Principia runners in scoring position with back-to-back strikeouts that kept the game tied at 1-1. In the bottom half, first-year Prisha Nigam led off the inning with a single to left and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brie Hale. With one out, Aurora Lomheim gave the Gorloks the 2-1 advantage with an RBI single through the left side that scored Nigam. 

In the top of the sixth, Rodriguez recorded back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout for her fifth consecutive shutout inning. In the top of the seventh, Rodriguez recorded back-to-back walks that put the winning run on first base for Principia. Following a strikeout and a fielder's choice out, Rodriguez recorded the final out of the game with a strikeout which secured her second victory of the season.  

For the game, Rodriguez pitched a complete game and recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts while Dickens and Lomheim recorded one hit and one RBI each. 

Game Two: Webster 10, Principia 0 (5 Innings)
Stichling got the starting call for game two in the circle as she recorded a scoreless inning that included two strikeouts. In the bottom half, the Gorloks Alyssa Lyell got the inning started by reaching bases on an error and immediately stole second. Following walks drawn by Stichling and Abigail Chandler that loaded the bases, Hinz cleared the bases with a three-run double down the left field line that gave the Gorloks the early 3-0 advantage. 

In the second inning, Stichling added another strikeout that led to her second scoreless inning. In the top of the third, Stichling sent all three batters down in order with two groundouts and a strikeout. In the bottom half, Lyell reached base on a fielder's choice and scored on an RBI double to left center by Hinz that increased the lead to 4-0. Moments later, Rodriguez stretched the lead to 5-0 with an RBI single up the middle that scored Hinz. 

In the top of the fourth, Stichling no-hitter came to an end with a lead off single by Ellie Church. Moments later, Principia loaded the bases with back-to-back singles. Stichling worked out of the jam with a force out at home and a line out to Hale at second base that kept the Panthers off the scoreboard. In the bottom frame, the Gorloks erupted for a five-run inning that started on three consecutive hits that put runners in scoring position. With one out, Stichling ripped a two-run single to left that scored Emma Bovaconti and Lyell for the 7-0 advantage. With runners on first and second, Chandler followed up with an RBI single up the middle that scored pinch runner Nigam for the 8-0 lead. The RBI machine in Hinz secured her sixth RBI's of the game with a two-run single to left that increased the lead to 10-0. 

In the top of the fifth, Stichling shut the door with a pair of strikeouts and a popout to Dickens at shortstop that generated the final score. 

For the game, Stichling pitched a five-inning shutout, recorded six strikeouts, and allowed just three hits. In addition, she went 1-for-2 with two RBI's. Hinz recorded career-highs with three hits and six RBI's. Chandler led the team with three runs while tying Rodriguez with one RBI each. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play on Wednesday, April 16 with a road trip to Blackburn College starting at 3:00PM in Carlinville, Illinois.
