Gorloks Split Conference Series Against Blackburn On Senior Day

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University softball team continued conference play by hosting Blackburn College for Senior Day on Wednesday. The Gorloks captured the series split with an 8-6 victory in the nightcap. With the split, Webster moves to 7-15 overall and 5-5 in conference play. 

Game One: Webster 2, Blackburn 5
Senior starting pitcher Braidyn Burr earned her eighth start of the season in the circle as she recorded a scoreless first inning that included a strikeout. In the top of the second, Blackburn took the early 1-0 lead on two hits. In the top of the third, Blackburn increased the deficit to 5-0 with a four-run inning. In the bottom half, Brie Hale and Emma Bovaconti got the inning started with back-to-back walks when Lyell followed up with a single to center. With the bases loaded, Madi Stiching drove in Hale that got the Gorloks on the board. 

In the top of the fourth, Webster made a pitching change to first-year Adriana Rodriguez as he recorded her first scoreless inning with two weak contact popouts at her position. In the bottom half, Abigail Chandler led off the inning with a double to right center and advanced to third on a single by Ainsley Hinz. Moments later, Marah Schotz cut the deficit to 5-2 with a sacrifice fly that scored Chandler. 

In the final three innings, Rodriguez recorded four strikeouts while the Gorloks offense added a hit per inning. For the game, Hinz recorded her second perfect 3-for-3 game of the season while Stichling and Schotz drove in one RBI each. WU's Burr pitched three innings and fanned two batters while Rodriguez pitched four innings and secured four strikeouts.

Game Two: Webster 8, Blackburn 6
Senior Cheyenne Dickens earned her fourth start in the circle as she opened the game with a scoreless inning that included two strikeouts. In the second, Dickens got in a jam and allowed a Blackburn run on wild pitch. In the bottom half, the Gorloks answered with a three-run inning that started on an RBI single to left by Schotz that scored Hinz and tied the game at 1-1. With two outs and runners on the corners, Bovaconti gave Webster the 3-1 lead with a two-run double to right center that scored Dickens and Schotz. 

In the top of the third, Blackburn responded with a three-run inning on three hits. Stichling took over on the mound with two outs as Aurora Lomheim threw out a Blackburn base runner at third that ended the inning. In the bottom half, the Gorloks answered with a three-run inning of their own that started on an RBI single up the middle by Hinz that scored Stichling and tied the game at 4-4. Following a double by Dickens that advanced Hinz to third, Schotz put the Gorloks back on top at 6-4 with a two-run single up the middle that scored Hinz and Dickens. 

Following a scoreless fourth inning by Stichling, the Gorloks added a single-run in the bottom frame on a bases-loaded wild pitch issued by BC's Julianna Tabian that allowed Bovaconti to score which extended the lead to 7-4. In the bottom of the fifth, Dickens and Aven Ragwar-Hayes reached base with singles. Moments later, Lyell laid down a bunt as the speedy Dickens came around  to score from second that increased the lead to 8-4. 

In the top of the sixth, Stichling retired all three batters in order for her third consecutive inning. In the top of the seventh,  Blackburn added two runs that generated the final score.  

For the game, Dickens recorded a season-best and team-high three hits. In addition, Schotz recorded a season-best three RBI's while Bovaconti drove in two. Lyell added two hits and one RBI. On the mound, Dickens pitched 2.2 innings and struck out two batters. Stitching pitched 4.1 innings out of relief and fanned one batter.

The Gorloks will continue conference play on Saturday, April 19 with a visit to Eureka College for a doubleheader starting at 1:00PM in Eureka, Illinois.
