Gorloks Softball Drop Series To Westminster

FULTON, Mo. - The Webster University softball team continued conference play with a visit to Westminster College for a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. The Gorloks battled the Blue Jays but fell short in both games of the doubleheader by the scores of 2-7 and 1-2.

Game One: Webster 2, Westminster 7

Webster and Westminster opened the first game of the doubleheader with back-to-back scoreless innings by starting pitchers Adriana Rodriguez and Payton Dudenhoeffer. In the top of the second, Ainsley Hinz led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a walk drawn by Madi Stichling. The Gorloks scoring opportunity came up short as both student-athletes were left stranded. In the bottom of the third, the Blue Jays opened the scoring with a three-run inning that included three hits.

In the fourth, Cheyenne Dickens led off the inning with a single and shortly later advanced to second but was left stranded. In the bottom of the fourth, Westminster stretched their lead to 5-0 on a two-run home run.

In the top of the fifth, the Gorloks responded with a two-run inning that started on an RBI double by Alyssa Lyell that scored Aven Ragwar-Hayes. With two outs, Emma Bovaconti made the score 2-5 with an RBI single that scored Lyell. In the bottom half, the Blue Jays countered with a two-run inning that made the score 2-7 which eventually generated the final score. Rodriguez got out of the inning with her second strikeout of the game. In the bottom of the sixth, Webster made a pitching change to Hinz as she recorded a scoreless inning that included a strikeout.

For the game, Dickens led the team with two hits while Lyell and Bovaconti recorded one hit and an RBI each. In the circle, Rodriguez pitched five innings while Hinz pitched one.

Game Two: Webster 1, Westminster 2

Webster opened the nightcap decision with a two-out double by Dickens in the first inning which was her third hit of the day. In the bottom of the first, Braidyn Burr earned her ninth start of the season in the circle as she got into an early jam. The Blue Jays scored two runs on five hits that generated the 0-2 deficit.

In the top of the second, Stichling led off the inning with a double but was left stranded on three consecutive Gorlok outs. In the bottom half, Burr recorded a scoreless inning that included two plays in the infield. In the top of the third, Brie Hale got the inning started with a lead off walk and advanced to second. Following a single by Aurora Lomheim and a walk drawn by Cheyenne Dickens that loaded the bases, Bovaconti got the Gorloks on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly that scored Hale that made the score 1-2.

In the fourth inning, Burr recorded her third consecutive scoreless inning that included two flyouts and a groundout. In the fifth, Webster made a pitching change to Hinz as she recorded a scoreless inning with a strikeout.

In the top of the sixth, Rodriguez led off the inning with a walk as Prisha Nigam entered the game as a pinch runner. The next batter in Abigail Chandler laced a single that advanced Nigam to second. With one out, Hale advanced both runners in scoring position with an out at third. The Gorloks scoring opportunity fell short as the score remained 1-2. In the bottom frame, Hinz kept the Blue Jays off the scoreboard for her second scoreless inning.

In the top of the seventh, Dickens drew a one-out walk that put the tying run on base. Unfortunately, Dickens did not advance any further as the Gorloks fell in a tight battle.

For the game, the Gorloks recorded four hits that came off the bats of Lomheim, Dickens, Stichling, and Chandler. In addition, Bovaconti recorded her 11th RBI of the season as Dickens drew a season-best three walks. In the circle, Burr pitched four innings while Hins pitched two innings of relief.

The Gorloks will resume conference play this Saturday, April 26 with a visit to Spalding University for SLIAC doubleheader starting at 1:00PM in Louisville, Kentucky.
