Webster Softball Falls Twice To Spalding

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Webster University softball team continued conference play with a road doubleheader at Spalding University on Saturday. The Gorloks dropped both games to the Golden Eagles by the identical scores of 3-11.  

Game 1: Webster 3, Spalding 11

Braidyn Burr earned her 10th start of the season in the circle as she got the leadoff hitter to flyout to Alyssa Lyell in center. With one out, the Golden Eagles responded with back-to-back hits that generated the 0-1 deficit. Moments later, Spalding added their second run of the inning on a double-steal attempt.

In the top of the second, the Gorloks answered back with a three-run inning that started on back-to-back singles by Madi Stichling and Ainsley Hinz. With one out, Marah Schotz laced a single down the left field line that loaded the bases. With the bases juiced, Lili Work recorded an RBI infield single that scored Stichling for the first Gorlok run of the game. With two outs and the bases loaded, Emma Bovaconti gave Webster the 3-2 advantage with a two-run single to left that scored Schotz and Work. 

In the bottom of the second, the Golden Eagles countered with a three-run inning of their own on a three-run triple that made the score 3-5. In the bottom of the third, Webster made a pitching change to Stichling as she recorded back-to-back scoreless innings that included four groundouts. 

In the top of the fifth and two outs, Cheyenne Dickens reached base on an error and advanced to second on the throw. However, the Gorloks scoring chance fell short that kept the score at 3-5. In the bottom half, Spalding recorded three runs on two hits and two fielding errors by Webster that pushed the score to 3-8. In the bottom of the sixth, the Golden Eagles scored three runs on four hits that generated the final score.   

For the game, Bovaconti went 1-for-2 and drove in a team-high two RBI's while Work recorded a hit and a RBI. In the circle, Burr pitched two innings as Stichling finished the final three and two-third innings and recorded seven groundouts.   


Game 2: Webster 3, Spalding 11

Webster opened the nightcap decision with a leadoff infield single by Aven Ragwar-Hayes as she immediately stole second. With a runner in scoring position, Bovaconti smashed an RBI double to the gap in right center that scored Ragwar-Hayes for the early 1-0 advantage. In the bottom half, Spalding responded with a three-run inning that included two hits that made the score 1-3. 

In the bottom of the second, the Golden Eagles increased the deficit to 1-8 with a five-run inning that included four hits and a fielding error by Webster. In the top of the third, the Gorloks got a run back on an RBI single by Stichling that scored Lyell that made the score 2-8. In the bottom of the third, reliever Adriana Rodriguez recorded a scoreless inning that included two groundouts and a lineout.

In the top of the fourth, Chandler led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second ona single by Schotz. With two outs and Chandler on third base, Aurora Lomheim reached base on a throwing error by Spalding that allowed Chandler to score that cut the deficit to 3-8. In the bottom frame, the Golden Eagles added a single-run on wild pitch issued by Rodriguez that pushed the deficit to 3-9. In the bottom of the fifth, Spalding added two runs in the inning that generated the final score.

For the game, Lyell and Ragwar-Hayes recorded two hits apiece while Lyell and Stichling recorded an RBI each. In the circle, Hinz pitched one inning and struckout one batter while Rodriguez closed out the final four and two-thirds innings and recorded five groundouts and three strikeouts.

The Gorloks will continue conference play on Sunday, April 27 with a road trip to Eureka College for a doubleheader starting at 1:00PM in Eureka, Illinois.
