WU’s Hartz Records Three RBI’s; Mevert Secures Season-High Six Strikeouts In Victory Over Millikin

SAUGET, Ill. - The Webster University baseball team continued their non-conference schedule by hosting Millikin University Thursday evening at Grizzlies Ballpark. The Gorloks extended their win streak to nine games with a 9-4 victory over the Big Blue. Webster improves to 22-6 overall on the season. 

Left-handed pitcher Zach Mevert earned his first start of the season and opened the game with three consecutive scoreless innings. In the bottom of the second, Cullen McBride got the inning started with a lead off hit-by-pitch. Shortly later, McBride advanced to third on a single to center by Dalton Groves. With two outs, Jacob Charlson gave the Gorloks the 2-0 advantage with a two-run single to right center that scored McBride and Groves. In the top of the third, Mevert recorded a pair of strikeouts that kept the Big Blue off the board. 

The Gorloks erupted with four runs in the bottom of the third that started on a bases loaded RBI sacrifice fly by McBride that scored Karl Peters. With two outs, Ryan Hartz stretched the lead to 5-0 with a two-run home run over the left field wall. WU's Ben Stedman kept the inning going as he reached on a walk. Moments later, Groves drove in Stedman with a double to left field that increased the lead to 6-0. 

In the top of the fourth, Millikin added their first run of the game on a solo home run by Andy Niebrugge. Mevert got out of the inning with back-to-back strikeouts that kept the score at 6-1. Following a weather delay and in the bottom half, James Theodore and Peters got the inning started with back-to-back hit-by-pitches. Following a successful double-steal by both student-athletes to be in scoring positions, R.J. LaRocco laced a RBI single that increased the lead to 7-1. With runners on the corners, McBride drove in Peters with a sacrifice fly to center that generated the 8-1 lead. 

In the top of the sixth, Webster made a pitching change to Ethan Luzum and entered in Quinton Johnston at shortstop. Luzum recorded a strikeout that led to a scoreless inning. In the bottom half, the Gorloks added a single run on a bases loaded walk drawn by Hartz that stretched the lead to 9-1. In the top of the eighth, Millikin responded with a three-run inning on two hits and a sacrifice fly that made the score 9-4. In the top of the ninth, reliever Xavier Garitty shut the door with two groundouts and a strikeout. 

For the game, Hartz recorded a team-high three RBI's that included a two-run homer. Evan Evola led the team with three hits. WU's Charlson and McBride recorded two RBI's each while Groves drove in one. On the mound, Mevert recorded season-highs of five innings and six strikeouts. Reliever Luzum and Carter each dealt a scoreless inning while Johnson recorded a season-high two strikeouts.

The Gorloks will return back to conference play this Saturday, April 12 hosting Spalding University for a doubleheader starting at 1:00pm at Grizzlies Ballpark.
