WU’s Greifelt and Hunt Pitch Complete Games; Gorloks Blast Three Home Runs In Sweep Over Spalding

SAUGET, Ill. - The Webster University baseball team continued conference play by hosting Spalding University on Saturday at Grizzlies Ballpark. WU's starting pitchers Ryan Greifelt and Carter Hunt went the distance for complete games while the Gorloks offense blasted three home runs that helped secure the sweep over Spalding. With the victories, Webster improves to 24-6 overall and moved into first place in the current SLIAC rankings. 

Game One: Webster 7, Spalding 3
The reigning D3baseball.com Pitcher of the Week in Greifelt earned his eighth start of the season and continued his dominance with a scoreless opening inning that included a pair of strikeouts. In the top of the second, Greifelt struckout the side that increased his strikeout total to five. Following another scoreless third inning by Greifelt, Karl Peters got the bottom half started with a bunt single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Moments later, Evan Evola gave the Gorloks the 1-0 advantage with an RBI single to center that scored Peters. 

In the top of the fourth, Greifelt recorded his fourth consecutive shutout inning that included a pair of flyouts and a 1-3 putout on a sacrifice bunt. In the bottom half, Cullen McBride extended the Gorloks lead to 2-0 with a leadoff solo home run over the left field wall. 

In the top of the fifth, the Golden Eagles got two runners on base when Ethan Tuttle put Spalding on top with a three-run home run. Greifelt recorded the final out of the inning with a strikeout that kept the score at 2-3. 

In the bottom of the sixth, the Gorloks answered with a four-run inning that started on a bases-loaded RBI single by Ryan Hartz that scored Evola. With the bases still loaded, Spalding's starting pitcher was called for a balk that scored R.J. LaRocco that took the 4-3 advantage. Moments later, Dalton Groves increased the lead to 6-3 with a two-run single to center that scored McBride and Hartz.

In the top of the seventh, Greifelt retired all three batters in the inning that led to his sixth shutout inning. In the eighth, Greifelt recorded a pair of groudouts and a strikeout that kept the lead at 6-3. In the bottom half, the Gorloks added an insurance run on a successful squeeze bunt by Groves that scored Hartz. Greifelt shut the door in the ninth by recording all three outs for his first complete game of the season. . 

For the game, Greifelt recorded nine strikeouts and allowed just five hits. Groves went 1-for-3 and drove in a team-high three RBI's. Evola recorded a three-hit game and drove in one RBI.

Game Two: Webster 8, Spalding 1
Right-handed starting pitcher in Carter took the mound for his seventh start of the season and recorded a scoreless opening inning with a strikeout. In the bottom frame, Peters got the inning started with a one-out triple off the center field wall. Moments later, Evola launched a two-run blast over the right field wall that gave the Gorloks the early 2-0 advantage. 

Following back-to-back scoreless innings by Carter, the Gorloks added a three-run inning in the third that started on a sacrifice fly by Peters that scored Jacob Charlson. With two outs and back-to-back walks that loaded the bases, Hartz laced a two-run single to center that scored James Theodore and Evola for the 5-0 lead. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Webster gained two insurance runs on a two-run home run by Peters that increased the lead to 7-0. In the top of the fifth, Spalding got a run back on a sacrifice fly that made the score 7-1. 

In the top of the sixth, Hunt recorded a pair of strikeouts and a popout that secured his sixth shutout inning. In the seventh, Hunt retired all three batters in the inning with ground outs and a popout to Charlson at second. In the eighth, Hunt added a strikeout and recorded two flyouts that kept the score at 7-1. In the bottom half, the Gorloks increased the lead to 8-1 with an RBI single Peters that scored Charlson. In the ninth, Hunt shut the door with a foul out to Ben Stedman at third and a pair of groudouts that generated the sweep. 

For the game, Hunt recorded six strikeouts and allowed just one run. Peters was a double away from the cycle and drove in a team-high four RBI's. Evola and Hartz each drove in two. 

The Gorloks will revert back to non-conference play this Wednesday, April 16 hosting Rose-Hulman at 3:00PM at Grizzlies Ballpark.
