WU’s Arsenault Secures All-Time Career Saves Record In Home Victory Over Rose-Hulman

SAUGET, Ill. - The No. 19 ranked Webster University baseball team non-conference play by hosting Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for a regional game Wednesday afternoon at Grizzlies Ballpark. The Gorloks extended their win streak to 12 games with a 5-3 victory over the Fightin' Engineers. WU's Joel Arsenault became the new all-time career saves leader in program history with his 13th career save. With the victory, Webster improves to 25-6 overall.

Right-handed starting pitcher Elijah Rompala-Matthews earned his ninth start of the season and opened the game with back-to-back groundouts. Following consecutive hits by Blackburn and a walk, Rompala-Matthews got out of the jam with an ending-inning strikeout for a scoreless inning.

In the top of the second, Rose-Hulman took the early 2-0 lead with an rbi single and a wild pitch issued by Rompala-Matthews. Reliever Jack Wilson recorded the final out of the inning with a flyout that kept the deficit at two. In the bottom half, the Gorloks loaded the bases on three consecutive walks drawn by R.J. LaRocco, Cullen McBride, and Ryan Hartz. Moments later, Ben Stedman drew a bases loaded walk that scored LaRocco for the first run of the game. With no outs, Nick Wrubluski drove in McBride that tied the game at two apiece.

In the top of the third and fourth innings, Wilson recorded back-to-back scoreless innings that included two strikeouts. In the top of the fifth, Webster made a pitching change to Ethan Luzum as he recorded a scoreless inning that included a pair of strikeouts. In the bottom frame, Wrubluski got the inning started with a lead off walk as Quinton Johnston entered the game as the pinch runner. Following a hit-by-pitch drawn by Jacob Charlson, James Theodore advanced both runners 90 feet with a successful sacrifice bunt. With runners in scoring position, Karl Peters increased the Gorlok lead to 4-2 with a two-run double to left that scored Johnston and Charlson. Moments later, Evan Evola extended the lead to 5-2 with an RBI single to center that scored Peters.

In the top of the sixth, Webster called upon reliever Collin Johnson and recorded the first two outs of the inning with back-to-back strikeouts. Following a hit-by-pitch and stolen base by RHIT's Peter Rogers, he scored on a rbi double by Tyler Otroszko that made the score 5-3. WU's reliever J.T. Miller recorded the final out of the inning that kept that game at a two-run lead.

In the top of the seventh, Miller recorded his first scoreless inning of the game that included two strikeouts and a fielder's choice groundout at second. In the eighth, Miller retired all three batters he saw for his second scoreless inning of the game.

In the top of the ninth, Webster called upon Arsenault as he recorded the first two outs of the inning with back-to-back strikeouts. The senior secured his record-breaking career saves record with a groundout to Peters at shortstop that ended the game.

For the game, Peters recorded two RBI's while Evola and Hartz drove in one each. Miller led all pitchers with three strikeouts and was credited with the win.
