WU’s Arsenault Sets New All-Time Single-Season Saves Record; Head Coach Kurich Captures 600th Career Wins In Sweep Over Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University baseball team made history in a road conference doubleheader sweep at Greenville University on Saturday. The Gorloks rallied late with a three-run ninth inning in game one for a 6-4 victory. In the nightcap decision, Webster blasted Greenville for the 21-6 victory for a seven inning game. 

This conference series sweep made history in the Webster University baseball record books as Joel Arsenault broke the all-time single-season saves record holder with his 10th save of the season. In addition, with the victory in game two, Head Coach Bill Kurich captured his 600th career win as the leader of the program. 

Game One: Webster 6, Greenville 4

Webster's left-handed starting pitcher Ryan Greifelt earned his ninth start of the season as he recorded an opening scoreless inning that included a strikeout. In the top of the second, R.J. LaRocco led off the inning with a triple down the right field line. Moments later, Cullen McBride drove in LaRocco for the early 1-0 advantage. First-year Ryan Hartz followed up with a single to right center and shortly later scored on an RBI double by Dalton Groves that increased the lead to 2-0. In the bottom half, the Panthers tied the game at 2-2 on a two-run home run by Michael Gibson.

In the third through fifth innings, Greifelt recorded three scoreless innings while adding a strikeout that kept the game at two apiece. In the bottom of the sixth, GU's Wilson Decker cracked the tie with a two-run home run that generated the 2-4 deficit. 

In the top of the seventh, the Gorloks got a run back on a solo home run over the left center field wall by Groves. In the bottom of the eighth, Greifelt recorded his sixth shutout inning with a pair of strikeouts and a flyout.

In the top of the ninth, McBride got the inning started with a leadoff walk as Quinton Johnston entered as the pinch runner. Immediately after Johnston's entry, Hartz advanced Johnston to second with an infield single. With no outs, Ben Stedman advanced both runners 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt. Following an intentional walk that loaded the bases, Nick Schumacher entered the game as the pinch hitter when he gave the Gorloks the 5-4 lead with a two-run single to left that scored Johnston and Groves. With one out, James Theodore drove in Groves that gave Webster the 6-4 lead. 

In the bottom of the ninth, Webster called upon Arsenault out of the bullpen as he struck out the side that secured his record breaking-performance. 

For the game, Groves and Schumacher drove in two while McBride and Theodore drove in one each. On the mound, Greifelt pitched eight complete innings and recorded seven strikeouts. Arsenault recorded one inning and recorded three strikeouts. 

Game Two: Webster 21, Greenville 6

In the nightcap decision, Carter Hunt took the mound for his eighth start of the season. In the bottom of the first, Hunt allowed two hits that led to a Greenville run. In the top of the second, the Gorloks erupted for a seven-run inning that started on a lead off solo home run by McBride that tied the game at one apiece. The Gorloks responded with three consecutive singles by Stedman, Groves, and Jacob Charlson that loaded the bases. With no outs, Karl Peters put the Gorloks on top at 2-1 with a sacrifice fly that scored Hartz. With one out, Theodore increased the lead to 3-1 with an RBI single to left that scored Stedman. Following a hit-by-pitch drawn by Evan Evola that loaded the bases, LaRocco capped off the seven-run inning with a grand slam that increased the lead to 7-1.

In the third and fourth innings, both teams did not score a run as Hunt recorded three strikeouts. In the top of the fifth, Evola pushed the Gorlok lead to 8-1 with a lead off solo home run over the wall in right center. In the bottom of the fifth, Hunt recorded two popouts and picked off a runner on second base for his fourth consecutive scoreless inning. 

In the top of the sixth, the Gorloks stretched the lead to 9-1 with an RBI single to left by Evola that scored Peters. In the bottom half, Webster made their first pitching change and entered in reliever Jack Wilson. Following a single by the Panthers, GU's Miggy Villalobos made the score 9-3 with a two-run home run. 

In the top of the seventh, the Gorloks erupted for a 12-run that started on an infield single by Stedman as an error by GU's that scored Hartz that made the score 10-3. With no outs, Groves launched a two-run home run that pushed the lead to 12-3. Following a hit-by-pitch drawn by Cameron Hailston and a walk by Peters, Theodore ripped an RBI double to left that scored Hailstone for the double-digit lead of 13-3. With no outs, Evola laced a two-run double to left center that scored Peters and Theodore that made the score 15-3. Moments later, LaRocco ripped an RBI double to right center that scored Evola for the 16-3 lead. 

The inning continued with a one-out pinch-hit RBI single by Reid Heitpas that scored LaRocco for the 17-3 advantage. Following a pinch-hit single by Nick Wrubluski, Hailstone increased the lead to 18-3 with an RBI single to center that scored Ethan Wielt. With runners in scoring position, Andrew Xenakis entered the game as a pinch hitter and ripped a two-run double to left that scored Heitpas and Wrubluski that made the score 20-3. The Gorloks capped off the 12-run inning with an RBI pinch-hit by Johnston that scored Hailstone. 

In the bottom of the seventh, the Panthers constructed a three-run inning on three hits that generated the final score. 

For the game, LaRocco recorded a season-high five RBI's that included a grand slam. Evola recorded a three-hit game and drove in four. Theodore also had a three-hit game as he tied Groves with two RBI's each. On the mound, Hunt pitched five innings, recorded five strikeouts, and was credited with the win. Relievers Wilson,  Zach Mevert, and Scott Detweiler made an appearance. 

The Gorloks will revert back to non-conference play on Tuesday, April 22 with a crosstown visit to Washington University of St. Louis for a regional game starting at 3:00PM.
