Gorloks Plate 27 Runs In Sweep Over Principia On Senior Day

SAUGET, Ill. - The No.16 ranked Webster University baseball team continued conference play by hosting Principia College on Saturday for Senior Day. The Gorloks scored 27 runs in the sweep over the Panthers lead by senior Nick Schumacher with nine RBI's (career-high six RBI's in game one) while senior Evan Evola recorded five RBI's. With the victories, Webster improves to 30-7 overall and 15-1 in conference play. 

Game 1: Webster 16, Principia 3

Senior starting pitcher J.T. Miller earned his sixth start of the season as he recorded a scoreless opening inning with two groundouts and a strikeout. In the bottom half, James Theodore and Evola got the inning started with back-to-back walks as R.J. LaRocco reached base with a hit-by-pitch. With the bases loaded, Schumacher gave the Gorloks the early 2-0 lead with a two-run double to left that scored Theodore and Evola. 

Following a hit-by-pitch drawn by Cullen McBride that loaded the bases for the second time in the inning, LaRocco increased the lead to 3-0 as he scored on a wild pitch. Moments later, Ben Stedman drew a walk that loaded the bases for the third time in the inning. With one out, Dalton Groves stretched the lead to 4-0 with a sacrifice fly that scored Schmuacher that capped off the scoring for the inning. 

In the bottom of the second, Karl Peters got the inning started with a one-out single to right. Moments later, Theodore blasted a triple to deep center that scored Peters as throwing error by Principia's shortstop allowed Theodore to score that increased the lead to 6-0.  Evola continued the inning with a walk, then advanced to second on a wild pitch, and was awarded third on a balk by PC's pitcher. Following a hit-by-pitch drawn by LaRocco, Schumacher ripped an RBI single to right that scored Evola which made the score 7-0. With runners on first and second, McBride laid down a bunt single that loaded the bases. With the bases juiced, Stedman increased the Gorlok lead to 8-0 with a sacrifice fly that scored LaRocco. 

In the top of the third inning, Webster made their first pitching change of the game and called upon senior Mason Young for his season debut. The right-hander recorded a scoreless inning that included two groundouts and a flyout. In the bottom half, Jacob Charlson led off the inning with a single to left and later scored on an RBI double to center by Peters for the 9-0 lead. Following a wild pitch advancement to third by Peters, Theodore drove in Peters and reached base on a fielder's choice that increased the lead to 10-0. Shortly later, the Gorloks loaded the bases on hit-by-pitches drawn by Evola and McBride. With two outs and the bases loaded, Principia's relief pitcher Casey Golbiw increased the Gorlok lead to 11-0 with a wild pitch that scored Theodore. 

In the top of the fourth, Young recorded his first strikeout of the season that led to his second consecutive shutout inning. In the bottom frame, the Gorloks recorded a five-run inning that started on an RBI single by Theodore that scored Charlson for the 12-0 lead. Following a walk drawn by Evola that loaded the bases, LaRocco drove in Peters that pushed the score to 13-0. With two outs, Schumacher set a new personal single-game RBI record of six RBI's with a three-run homerun over the left field wall that increased the lead to 16-0. 

In the top of the fifth, Webster called upon senior reliever Michael Allsup for his Gorlok debut. Allsup recorded a scoreless inning that included his first career strikeout and a groundout. In the bottom half, Ryan Bibb and Quinton Johnston entered the game as pinch-hitters as both student-athletes recorded a single. That single by Bibb marked his first hit of his Gorlok career. 

In the top of the sixth, Principia recorded four hits that produced three runs that made the score 16-3. In the top of the seventh, Webster made their final pitching change of the game and entered in senior Cade Gebhard. Gebhard closed out the game with two groundouts and a foul out popout to Groves behind the plate. 

For the game, Schumacher went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer for a career-high six RBI's. Theodore went 2-for-3 with four runs and three RBI's while Peters went 3-for-4 and scored three times. On the mound, four seniors recorded at least one inning of work.


Game 2: Webster 11, Principia 1

In the nightcap decision, senior Ethan Luzum got the start on the mound as he recorded a scoreless opening inning that included two looking strikeouts. In the bottom half, Peters gave the Gorloks the early 1-0 lead with a solo home run over the left field wall. In the top of the second, Luzum increased his strikeout total to four with a pair of strikeouts that led to his second shutout inning. 

In the bottom of the third, Peters and Theodore got the inning started with back-to-back singles. Moments later, Evola increased the lead to 4-0 with a three-run no-doubter home run over the right center field wall. 

In the top of the fifth, Webster called upon senior reliever Xavier Garrity for his second appearance of the season. Garrity stuckout the first batter he faced which secured his first career strikeout as he added another strikeout for the final out of the inning for a scoreless inning. In the bottom half, LaRocco and Schumacher got the inning started with back-to-back walks and later 90 feet on a successful double-steal attempt. With one out and runners in scoring position, Stedman increased the lead to 5-0 with a sacrifice fly that scored LaRocco. 

In the top of the sixth, Webster made a pitching change and entered in graduate-student McBride. Following a leadoff double, McBride responded with back-to-back looking strikeouts. Moments later, he stranded the Principia runner at second with a groundout to Stedman at third which led to a scoreless inning.     

In the bottom of the sixth, Charlson led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches. Following a walk and a stolen base by Peters, Charlson scored on a wild pitch that increased the lead to 6-0. With two runners in scoring position and no outs, Evola stretched the lead to 8-0 with a two-run double to right that scored Peters and Theodore. With one out and Evola on third, Schumacher capped off the four-run inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Evola. 

In the top of the seventh, Webster made a pitching change and called upon senior reliever Scott Detweiler for his third appearance of the season. Detweiler kept the Panthers off the scoreboard with a scoreless inning that included a strikeout. 

In the top of the eighth, Detweiler struckout the leadoff batter which ended his outing. Webster made the final pitching change of the game and called upon the current all-time career and single-season saves record holder in senior Joel Arsenault. Arsenault got into an early jam with back-to-back singles and a hit-by-pitch. With the bases loaded, Arsenault hit the batter with the pitch that put the Panthers on the board. 

In the bottom of the eighth, Peters reached base on an error and advanced to third on a double to left center by Evola. With two runners in scoring position, Schumacher walked off the game by the mercy-rule with a two-run double to center that scored Peters and Evola.

For the game, Evola went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and recorded a career-high five RBI's. WU's Schumacher went 2-for-3 with three RBI's while Peters and Stedman drove in one each. On the mound, Luzum pitched four innings and recorded a career-high six strikeouts. All four senior relievers recorded at least two strikeouts each in the victory.  

The Gorloks will revert back to non-conference play on Sunday, April 27 with a road trip to Illinois Wesleyan University to play against Aurora University starting at 3:00PM in Bloomington, Illinois.
