WU’s Evola Breaks All-Time Career Home Run Record In 16-3 Victory Over Aurora

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The No.16 Webster University baseball team played their final non-conference decision of the season by meeting Aurora University at Illinois Wesleyan University on Sunday. Webster's Evan Evola blasted a three-run home run for his 35th career home run which broke the all-time career home runs school record. The Gorloks added two additional three-run home runs that led to a dominant 16-3 victory over the Spartans. With the victory, Webster improves to 31-7 overall and 16-6 in non-conference play for the season.

In this neutral site matchup, Webster was the away team as Karl Peters led off the game with a single to left, immediately stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Evola gave Webster the 1-0 advantage with a sacrifice fly that scored Peters. In the bottom half, Carter Hunt took the mound for his ninth start of the year and recorded a scoreless inning that included two groundouts and a popout. In the second, the Gorloks increased the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single by Dalton Groves that scored Ryan Hartz. The bottom frame, Aurora got a single run back in back-to-back hits that made the score 2-1. 

In the top of the third, Peters got the inning started with a lead off walk and advanced to second on a single by James Theodore. Following a hit-by-pitch drawn by Evola that loaded the bases, Nick Schumacher increased the lead to 3-1 with an RBI walk that scored Peters. With one out and two runners on base, R.J. LaRocco stretched the lead to 6-1 with a three-run home run over the left center field wall. In the bottom half, Carter sent down all three batters in the inning that included two flyouts and a strikeout for his second shutout inning of the game. 

In the top of the fourth, Groves and Jacob Charlson got the inning started with back-to-back singles. With two outs and two runners on, Evola became the all-time career home runs leader in program history with a three-run blast for his 35th of his career. In the bottom of the fourth, Webster made their first pitching change of the game and entered in left-hander Ryan Greifelt as he recorded a scoreless inning that included a strikeout. 

In the top of the fifth, Ben Stedman led off the inning with a double to right and advanced to third on a hit by Charlson. With runners on the corners, Peters increased the lead to 10-1 with an RBI single to center that scored Stedman. Following a hit-by-pitch by Theodore that loaded the bases, Evola drove in Charlson that pushed the score to 11-1. In the bottom half, the Spartans got a run back on a solo home run by Carson Faust. 

In the top of the sixth, the Gorloks loaded the bases with three consecutive walks by LaRocco, Hartz, and Stedman. With the bases juiced, Groves drove in LaRocco that put the game back to a double-digit lead at 12-2. With runners on the corners and out away, Hartz stretched the lead to 13-2 as he scored on a wild pitch. Following a walk drawn by Charlson, Peters increased the lead to 16-2 with a three-run blast over the left field wall. In the bottom half, the Spartans added a run on back-to-back hits that generated the score to 16-3. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Webster made a pitching change to Joel Arsenault as he recorded the final three outs of the game that included a strikeout. 

For the game, Evola went 1-for-3 that included a season-high five RBI's while Peters went 3-for-4 with four RBI's and three runs. In addition, LaRocco went 2-for-3 and recorded three RBI's and scored twice while Groves went 2-for-3 and drove in two RBI's. 

On the mound, Carter and Greifelt recorded three innings each as both student-athletes recorded two strikeouts. Arsenault pitched one inning and recorded one strikeout. 

The Gorloks will return back to conference play this Saturday, May 3 hosting Fontbonne University for the final time starting at 1:00PM at Grizzlies Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.
