Peters Ties Single-Game HR Record With Three In NCAA Regional Victory Over MSOE

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The No. 13 Webster University baseball team opened regional play in the 2025 NCAA Division III Baseball Regionals with a contest against Milwaukee School of Engineering at Roy E. Lee Field on the campus of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. The Gorloks blasted five home runs led by Karl Peters with a new career-high of three that led to a 13-2 victory over MSOE. With the victory, Webster improves to 37-7 overall and advances to play #22 Belhaven University tomorrow afternoon. 

Senior right-hander Carter Hunt earned his 11th start on the mound for the season and opened the game with a scoreless inning that included his first strikeout of the game. In the bottom of the first, Peters led off the game for the Gorloks with his first homerun of the game over the center field wall for the 1-0 lead. With one out, fellow senior Evan Evola ripped a double to the gap in right center and later scored on an RBI double by Nick Schumacher that increased the lead to 2-0. Following a walk drawn by Ryan Hartz that put two runners on, senior Ben Stedman increased the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single to left field that scored Schumacher. 

In the top of the second, Hunt sent down the middle of the Raiders lineup in order that included two strikeouts and a flyout. In the bottom half, Peters increased the lead to 4-0 with his second solo home run of the game over the center field wall. In the top of the third, Hunt recorded his second straight 1-2-3 inning of the game that included a strikeout. In the bottom frame, Hartz stretched the lead to 6-0 with a two-run home run home run over the left field wall. 

In the top of the fourth, Hunt increased his strikeout total to six with a pair of strikeouts that led to his fourth scoreless inning of the game. In the bottom half, Jacob Charlson reached base on a hit-by-pitch and scored on a two-run deep fly over the left field wall by Peters that made the score 8-0. Following a walk by James Theodore, the current all-time home run leader in Webster history books in Evola increased the lead to 10-0 with a two-run homer over the center field wall.

In the top of the fifth, the Raiders got the first two runners on base but Hunt left those runners stranded with three quick outs for his fifth shutout inning. In the bottom half, Dalton Groves led off side with a single up the middle and later scored on a RBI single by Theodore the Gorloks to 11-0 advantage. 

In the top of the sixth, Webster made their first pitching change of the game and entered in right-hander Wes Carter. The sophomore reliever recorded two flyous and a fielder's choice that kept the Raiders off the scoreboard. 

In the top of the seventh, MSOE recorded consecutive hits that ended Carter's outing.  The Gorloks called upon senior left-handed Scott Detweiler out of the bullpen as recorded the final two outs of the inning with two strikeouts. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Evola got the Gorloks started with a one-out single through the right side and immediately advanced to second on a wild pitch. With a runner in scoring position, R.J. LaRocco stretched the lead to 12-0 with an RBI double down the left field line that scored Evola. With two outs, Hartz capped off the scoring for the inning and stretched the lead to 13-0  with an RBI single to center that scored LaRocco.   

In the top of the eighth, the Raiders recorded three hits that produced two runs that made the score of 13-2. In the top of the ninth, Webster made the final pitching change of the game and entered in right-hander Ethan Luzum. The Calmar, Iowa native struckout the first batter he faced and followed up with a pair of flyouts that ended the game.  

For the game, Peters launched a career-high three home runs while adding 13 total bases and four RBI's. In addition, Hartz recorded two hits and three RBI's while Evola had a three-hit game with two RBI's. On the mound, Hunt pitched five innings, recorded seven strikeouts, and secured his ninth victory of the year. In addition, relievers Carter, Detweiler, and Luzum pitched at least one inning each.

The Gorloks will continue regional play on Saturday, May 17 hosting No. 22 ranked Belhaven University Blazers at 3:30PM at SIUE.
