Gorloks Fall Twice On Opening Day Of WashU Invite Tournament

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University volleyball team opened the 2025 season with a pair of matches at the Washington University Bear Invite on Friday. The Gorloks battled closely in both matches against Loras College and Bluffton University but dropped both matches by the scores of 0-3 respectively. 

Match #1: Webster 0, Loras 3

In the first match of the day, Webster and Loras opened the set battling back-and-forth to a tie at four apiece. In that stretch of points, Loras jumped out to an early 4-1 lead that included a block by Megan Zablonski. Moments later, the Gorloks responded with three consecutive points on kills by Carley Hersberger and Riley Watson while Hersberger added a service ace that tied the set at four apiece. 

With the set tied, the Duhawks answered with a 6-0 run that made the score 4-10. Moments later, Webster chipped back with a 3-0 run on a kill by Lauren Brown, a service ace by Delaney Morio and an attacking error by Loras that cut the deficit to 7-10. The set continued with both teams trading points but Loras increased the deficit to 9-15.

The Gorloks continued to battle back and responded with a 6-1 run that started on three straight errors by Loras. Moments later, Zablonski set up Brown for a kill then answered with back-to-back service aces that cut the deficit to 15-16. The set continued with back-and-forth play by both teams that pushed the score to 17-18. Shortly later, Loras added a 3-1 run that made the score 18-21.

With a three-point deficit, Webster answered back with a 5-2 run that included three kills by Zablonski and a service ace by Watson that tied the set at 23 apiece. Moments later, Loras achieved set point at 23-24 but the Gorloks claimed set point at 25-24 on back-to-back kills by Delaney Fullenkamp and Catherine Rennier. On the following serve, LC's Autumn Finch added a kill that tied the set at 25 apiece. With the set tied at 26, Brown put the Gorloks back on top with a kill that made the score 27-26. However, Loras responded with three consecutive points that won the set by the score of 27-29. 

The Duhawks opened the second set with a 11-1 run that included a kill by Zablonski. Following a point by each team, Webster chipped back with a 5-0 run that included kills by Rennier and Grace White that made the score 7-12. Shortly later, the Gorloks cut the deficit down to three at 11-14 with a kill by Rennier, an assisted block by Zablonski and Eva Tarlos, and a service ace by Jaycee Lewis. Loras responded back with a 3-0 run that pushed the score to 11-17. Immediately following the run by Loras, Webster responded with a 6-1 run that started on a kill by Zablonski. Following the kill by Zablonski, Watson added a service ace while Fullenkamp and Maggie Stanford added a kill each. However, Loras closed out the set with a 7-1 run that took the set by the score of 25-18. 

Webster opened the third set with a 9-0 advantage that started on a kill by Zablonski. Following a kill by White, Zablonski added four consecutive service aces while Tyler Ramstack capped off the run with her first kill of the match. With an 11-2 advantage, the Duhawks responded with a 9-1 run that pushed the lead to one 12-11. Moments later, the Gorloks increased the lead back to three at 14-11 that included a kill by Ramstack. Immediately following the kill by Ramstack, Loras countered with three straight kills that tied the set at 14 apiece. 

With the set tied at 15 apiece, Webster answered with an 8-3 run that included five errors by Loras, two kills by Fullenkamp, and a kill by White that pushed the lead to 23-18. However, the Duhawks responded with a 6-0 run that achieved set point 24-23. Following a bad set error by Loras that tied the set at 24 apiece, the Duhawks answered with back-to-back points that took the match.

For the match, Fullenkamp and Zablonski led the team with six kills each while White added four. In addition, Zablonski set a new career-high with six service aces while Watson contributed two. The Gorloks tallied 30 assists led by Delaney Morio with 13 while Watson added nine. 

On the defensive side of the ball, Maddie Bock and Lewis led the team with nine digs apiece while Watson collected seven. As a team, the Gorloks registered three solo blocks by Zablonski, Rennier, and Tarlos while Fullenkamp and White led the team with three assisted blocks each.


Match #2: Webster 0, Bluffton 3

The Gorloks opened the nightcap match against Bluffton with a 5-1 run that included a service ace by Morio and four errors by Bluffton. Moments later, the Beavers countered with a 5-1 run of their own that tied the set at six apiece. The set continued with both teams trading additional 5-1 runs that pushed the set to a tie at 12 apiece. 

Both teams continued to battle back-and-forth as the set rallied to a tie at 17. With the set tied, the Beavers countered with a 6-3 run that generated the deficit of 20-23. Moments later, the Gorloks answered with a 3-1 run on kills by White and Fullenkamp that cut the deficit to one at 23-24. However, on the next serve, BU added the final point of the set with a kill that took the set. 

The Gorloks opened the second set with a 9-1 run that included five errors by Bluffton, two kills by Fullenkamp, a kill by White, and an assisted block by Stanford and Fullenkamp. Shortly later, the Beavers cut the Gorlok lead down to five at 11-6 with a 5-2 run. Webster and Bluffton continued the set by exchanging points that pushed the score to 17-11. Moments later, the Beavers answered with a 7-0 run that took the 18-17 advantage. 

Webster and Bluffton continued the set by exchanging points as both teams pushed the score to a tie at 21 apiece. With the set tied, the Beavers answered with a 3-0 run that generated the 21-24 deficit. The Gorloks added their final points of the set on back-to-back kills by White but Bluffton took the set by the score of 25-23.     

Webster opened the third set with a 6-3 advantage that included three errors by Bluffton and kills by Fullenkamp, White, and Ramstack. Moments later, the Beavers responded with a 5-1 run that took the 8-7 advantage. Following that run, Zablonski gave the Gorloks the 10-8 lead with three consecutive kills. Moments later, Bluffton answered with a 13-3 run that generated the 13-21 deficit. 

With an eight-point deficit, the Gorloks chipped back with a 9-2 run that cut the deficit to one at 22-23. In the run, Zablonski added two kills while Rennier, White, and Brown added one each. However, Bluffton closed out the set with consecutive points that took the match.

For the match, Zablonski led the team with 10 kills while White contributed nine kills. As a team, the Gorloks recorded 29 assists as Morio led with 10. On the defensive side of the net, Zablonski collected a team-high 12 digs while Lewis collected six. 

The Gorloks will close out invitational play tomorrow August 30 at 10:00 AM with a contest against Willamette University at WashU in St. Louis, Missouri.
