FENTON, Mo. - The Webster University women's soccer team captured their first victory of the season with 2-0 shutout win over Knox College on Labor Day. WU's Payton Montana and Mayrin Soto netted goals while first-year goalkeeper Kayla Jantzen recorded her first collegiate win and shutout. With the victory, Webster improves to 1-1 on the season.

Webster and Knox opened this non-conference match with back-and-forth play that featured a corner kick by Webster but neither team recorded a shot. In the 10th minute, the Gorloks sent the ball near the attacking box when the shot by Soto was saved by Knox's goalkeeper Darby Wallig. Nearly 10 minutes later, the Gorloks had another great scoring opportunity that resulted in a shot by Malaya Blakely that went just wide left. In the 23rd minute, Webster sent the ball near the attacking box when Mia Smith ripped a shot that missed just high. Over the next 14 minutes of play, the Gorloks kept that offensive aggressiveness and added five shots which was led by Montana with three while Smith and Gemma Bowers added one each.

Moments later, Mia Smith sent in a perfect ball into the box when Montana netted a header goal for 1-0 advantage. That goal by Montana marks her first of the season. The Gorloks and Prairie Knox battled back-and-forth for the remainder of the half as Webster took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Soto ripped two shots on goal but both shots were saved by Wallig. Shortly later, Smith collected the ball at the top of the box and blasted a shot off the top cross bar. In the 55th minute, Payton Harting sent the ball into the attacking zone that found the foot of Malaya Blakey. Moments later, Blakely crossed the ball near the goal when Soto got her revenge on Wallig and scored the goal. That goal by Soto marks her second goal of the season.

Less than two minutes later, Webster sent the ball back into the attacking box when Knox recorded a foul in the box that gave the Gorloks a penalty kick. Moments later, Montana stepped up and took the penalty kick but her shot was saved by Wallig. Shortly later in the 70th minute, Webster had another great scoring chance when Elin Nilsson fired a shot on goal but it was saved by Wallig. Two minutes later, Montana had a great opportunity for another goal but Wallig made an incredible save near the crossbar. In the final six minutes of regulation, the Gorloks added six shots that came from Soto (2), Bowers, Lucy Elfrink, Smith and Nilsson but neither attempts passed Wallig which ended the match.

For the match, Webster outshot Knox 26-3 which included a 11-0 shots on goal differential. Soto led the attack with seven shots while Montana blasted six as Smith added five. The Gorloks had five corner kicks compared to the one from Knox. In net, first-year goalkeeper Jantzen had a calm debut as she had two shots at her but neither were on goal.
