Webster Dominates With 37 Shots in 2-0 Victory Over Benedictine

FENTON, Mo. - The Webster University women's soccer team continued their four-game homestand with the third home decision against Benedictine University Saturday afternoon at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. The Gorloks attacked the offensive zone all match and recorded a team-high 37 shots (16 on goal) that led to a 2-0 shutout victory over the Eagles. With the victory, Webster improves to 2-1 overall on the season.

In the opening minute of the game, Webster battled Benedictine in the defensive zone that resulted in a save by goalkeeper Courtney Haneline. Following that drive, the Gorloks put on a relentless attack that resulted in three shots by Payton Montana and two shots by Sofia Bosnos but no attempt found the back of the net. 

In the 16th minute, the Gorloks responded with an offensive drive on a through ball to Bosnos when she blasted a shot on net but BU's goalkeeper Marissa Amador made the save. The rebound shot attempt by Mia Smith was altered by a Benedictine defender for a corner kick. On the corner kick, the kick was saved by Amador.

Moments later, the Gorloks were awarded a free kick midway through the 18-yard box and the midline. On the free kick taken by Payton Harting into the box, Montana put a header attempt on goal but it was saved by Amador. Moments later, the Gorloks kept the offensive pressure on, resulting in shots by Mia Smith, Jasmine Hubbard, and Mayrin Soto as Amador collected two saves. 

Less than two minutes later, in the 25th minute, the Eagles countered with an offensive attack that resulted in a shot on goal by Kailyn Knudsen but it was saved by Haneline. Less than a minute later, the Gorloks countered with an attack that resulted in a shot by Bosnos but it was saved. For the remainder of the half, Webster had several scoring opportunities that included 10 shots as Amador made three saves that kept the match scoreless at halftime.  

Moments into the second half, Benedictine added an offensive attack that resulted in a save by Haneline. In the 48th minute, the Gorloks earned a corner kick that resulted in back-to-back shots by Jasmine Hubbard and Smith but both shots were saved by Amador. In the 60th minute, Montana sent in a fantastic through ball then found Malaya Blakely as she took one dribble and stretched the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. 

Shortly later in the 68th minute, the Gorloks sent the ball into the attacking zone that resulted in another shot by Smith but it was saved by Amador. Less than ten minutes later, transfer Elin Nillson ripped a shot on net but it was Amador. In the 79th minute, Webster added two shots by Montana and Sienna Inouye.

In the 87th minute, the Gorloks attacked the offensive box that resulted in a penalty kick. Moments later, Montana stepped up and delivered the penalty kick but it was saved by Amador. In the final seconds of the match, Webster was awarded a corner kick when Soto sent in a wonderful ball that found the head of Montana for the goal that generated the final score. 

For the match, Montana led the attack with nine shots while Bosnos tallied seven shots as Smith contributed five. In net, Haneline recorded six saves and her first shutout of the season.  As a team, Webster outshot Benedictine 37-12 and recorded eight corner kicks to the zero of BU. 

The Gorloks will close out this four-game homestand on Wednesday, September 10 hosting Millikin University at 7:00PM in Fenton, Missouri.
