Gorloks Extend Shutout Win Streak To Three Games With 2-0 Victory Over Millikin

FENTON, Mo. - The Webster University women's soccer team closed out a four-game homestand by hosting Millikin University Wednesday evening at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. The Gorloks used a balanced attack that led to a 2-0 victory over the Big Blue for their third consecutive shutout of the season. With the victory, Webster improves to 3-1 overall. 

The reigning SLIAC Offensive Player of the Week in Payton Montana started the new week right where she left off as she netted her third consecutive header goal. In addition, transfer forward Sofia Bosnos scored her first goal in a Gorlok uniform while Lucy Elfrink and Riley Cappozzo were credited with their first assists of the season. In net, Courtney Haneline made eight saves that led to her second consecutive shutout victory. 

In the opening ten minutes of the match, the Gorloks defended their territory and faced three corner kicks and one shot. Two minutes later, in the 12th minute, Webster orchestrated a great offensive attack that resulted in a great scoring opportunity by Malaya Blakely but her shot missed just right. Shortly later, the Gorloks attacked the box that resulted in a corner kick. On the corner kick, Payton Harting got a head on it but the attempt went wide. Shortly later, the sent the ball back into the box that resulted in a shot by Blakely but it was saved by Jessica Bearley.

Midway through the half, the Big Blue added six shots where Haneline had three incredible saves that kept the match scoreless. Webster and Millikin continued the first half with scoreless back-and-forth play as both teams battled it out near the midline. The Gorloks quickly responded with an offensive attack that resulted in a corner kick. In the 38th minute, Mia Smith entered in a fantastic ball when Montana jumped up and headed it in for the goal. Webster and Millikin battled between the end line for the remainder of the half as the Gorloks took the 1-0 lead in halftime. 

The Big Blue opened the second half with two corner kicks and two shots but both shot attempts went wide. Shortly later, in the 51st minute, the Gorloks had another great scoring opportunity when Mayrin Soto ripped a shot on goal but missed just right. Following that shot by Soto, Millikin added three shots on goal over the next nine minutes as Haneline secured three huge saves. In the 66th minute, the Big Blue had another scoring opportunity but Haneline made a spectacular sliding save.

Shortly later, in the 72nd minute, Gemma Bowers dribbled the ball over half the length of the field to the box and blasted a shot on goal but Bearley made an unbelievable diving save. Less than five minutes later, Smith and Bosnos blasted shots on goal but both attempts were saved. 
In the 78th minute, the Gorloks started an offensive drive from a goal kick when Elfrink found Cappozzo near the mid line when Cappozzo sent a ball up field to Bosnos when she scored the goal. For the remainder of the match, both teams added one shot on goal as both attempts were saved by each goalkeeper which made the match final. 

For the match, Bosnos led the team with two shots on goal while six other Gorloks recorded at least one shot on goal. As a team, Webster was outshot 24-13 and recorded five corner kicks. 

The Gorloks will have their first road match of the season on Sunday, September 14 visiting Aurora University starting at 12:00PM in Aurora, Illinois.
