Webster’s Second-Half Surge Powers 3–1 Victory Over Harris-Stowe On Senior Night

FENTON, Mo. - The Webster University men's soccer team continued non-conference play by hosting Harris-Stowe State University for Senior Night Wednesday evening at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. The Gorloks scored three second half goals that earned a 3-1 victory over the Hornets for their first home victory of the season. With the victory, Webster improves to 2-3 overall on the season.

Prior to the match, Head Coach Nenad Curic and his staff recognized seven Gorloks for Senior Night which included Luke Dillon, Luke Walsh, Ian Meyer, Danny Nusinovic, Hayden Hatley, Ty Baudendistel, and honorary member Patrick Fuller. All seven individuals were on the 2022 SLIAC regular season title team.

Webster and Harris-Stowe opened the match with back-and-forth play as the Hornets added the first shot of the match but it went out wide. In the 11th minute, the Gorloks responded with a counter attack that resulted in a corner kick but no shot was found on the entry ball. Moments later, first-year Henrique Cardoso ripped the first shot of the match for Webster but his attempt was saved. Six minutes later, in the 18th minute, Webster constructed a fantastic offensive attack that resulted in a shot on goal by Nusinovic but the attempt was saved.

Just over midway into the first half, in the 25th minute, Webster orchestrated another counter attack that resulted in a shot by Hayley but it went out right. The Gorloks and Hornets battled between the endlines for the remainder of the half that included a shot by Juan Ignacio Martins Ferreira which kept the match scoreless.

Webster came out in the second half with attacking the net. In the 47th minute, Scott Price collected a diagonal ball near the sideline. Following a couple dribbles, Price blasted a left-footed laser shot well outside the 18-yard box in the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage. Over the next ten minutes of play, the Hornets added four shots but no attempt was on goal.

Shortly later, in the 64th minute, the Gorloks countered with an attack when Hatley collected the ball and took a couple dribbles to the net and was fouled just outside the box. On the free kick, Price ripped a shot on net which was saved but Marcos Gonzales-Collado headed in the rebound for the 2-0 lead. That goal by Gonzales-Collado marks his first of the season and first in a Gorlok uniform.

Less than five minutes later, in the 68th minute, Webster constructed an offensive attack that earned a corner kick. On the corner kick taken by Elias Silva Ibanez, HSSU's goalkeeper misplayed the leaping catch attempt when senior captain Nusinovic was in the right spot and kicked the ball into the back of the net for the goal. That goal by Nusinovic marks his first of the season and his fourth of his career.

In the 74th minute, the Hornets responded with a counter attack that resulted in a goal that made the score 3-1. For the remainder of the match, Webster defended off three shot attempts by HSSU which generated the final score.

For the match, Price led the attack with four shots while Nusinovic and Price contributed two shots each on goal. Senior goalkeepers Baudendistel and Dillon split time in net. As a team, Webster outshot Harris-Stowe 17-11 that included an 8-3 on goal differential,

The Gorloks will continue non-conference play on Sunday, September 21st with a trip to Simpson College starting at 1:00PM in Indianola, Iowa.
