Webster Battles Hard but Falls in Five-Set Heartbreaker to Simpson

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University volleyball team traveled across town to Washington University for a neutral site non-conference match against Simpson College on Friday. The Gorloks battled the Storm to a five-set match but came up just short by the final score of 2-3. 

Webster and Simpson opened the match with back-and-forth action as a kill by Eva Tarlos generated a 3-4 deficit. Moments later, the Gorloks added the first run of the match which was a 6-1 run that took the 9-6 advantage. In the run, Megan Zablonski got her night started with a kill while Tyler Ramstack recorded a solo block. With a one-point lead of 9-8, Webster countered with a 6-2 run that stretched the lead to 15-10 that included two kills by Grace White.

The Storm fought back in the set that responded with a 8-4 run that cut the lead to one at 19-18. Immediately following that Simpson run, Webster answered with a 5-1 run that started on a kill by Delaney Morio. Moments later, Zablonski and White added a kill each when White and Delaney Fullenkamp achieved set point with an assisted block. The Gorloks added the final point of the set on a Storm error that won the set by the score of 25-21.  

Simpson opened the second set with a 9-4 advantage that included two kills by White and a kill each from Fullenkamp and Morio. Moments later, Webster countered with five unanswered points that included a service ace by Tarlos and kills by Zablonski and White that tied that set at nice apiece. With the set tied at 11, the Storm added a 6-1 run that generated the 12-17 deficit. The Gorloks followed up with three consecutive points that cut the deficit to 15-17 that included a kill by Tarlos and a service ace by Jaycee Lewis. However, Simpson closed out the set with an 8-2 run that evened the match at one piece.

Webster opened the third set with a 7-1 advantage that included two kills by White and a service ace by Zablonski. Following a few points of back-and-forth play, the Gorloks added a 4-1 run as a kill by Fullenkamp increased the lead to 13-5. Moments later, the Storm constructed a 6-2 run that pushed the lead down to four at 15-11. Immediately following the Simpson run, Webster countered with a 5-1 run that pushed the lead to 20-12 that included a kill by four different Gorloks. Webster closed out the set with a 5-2 that included three kills by Tarlos and a kill by White that took the set by the score of 25-16. 

Simpson opened the fourth set with the early 2-4 advantage but Webster answered with six unanswered points that took the 8-4 lead. In the run, Tarlos, Lauren Harms, and Fullenkamp added a kill each while Morio capped it off with a service ace. Following that run, the Gorloks and Storm battled back-and-forth and pushed the set to a 12-11 advantage. With the one-point lead, the Gorloks responded with four straight points that increased the lead to 16-11 which included a kill by Ramstack and back-to-back service aces by Zablonski. Immediately following the Webster run, Simpson countered with five unanswered points that tied the set at 16 apiece. 

Late in the set, the Gorloks and Storm battled it out and traded points to a 20-21 deficit. Moments later, Webster achieved set point with a 4-1 run that included kills by Fullenkamp and White. Immediately after the Webster run, Simpson responded with three consecutive points that achieved set point at 25-24. Moments later, the Gorloks regained the set point at 26-25 with a kill by Zablonski. However, the Storm closed out the set with three straight points that forced a fifth set. 

Webster opened the final set with a 4-1 advantage that included a kill by White and back-to-back service aces by Zablonski. Moments later, Simpson chipped back with a 5-2 run that tied the set at six apiece. Shortly later, Fullenkamp added another kill that tied the match at nine apiece. Late in the set, Simpson added a 5-2 run that achieved match point at 11-14. Moments later, Webster countered with three consecutive points and tied the set at 14 apiece with two kills by Harms and one by White. Following a point by each team, the Storm closed out the match with back-to-back points that generated the defeat. 

For the match, White led the attack with a season-best 13 kills while Tarlos collected a season-best with nine kills as Fullenkamp added nine. The 2024 SLIAC Third Team All-Conference selection in Riley Watson dished out a season-best 21 assists while Morio added 14.  At the service line, Zablonski led all student-athletes with five service aces while Harms contributed three. 

On the defensive side of the net, three Gorloks achieved double-digit digs marks led by Zablonski with 15 digs while Watson collected 13 as Harms secured 12 digs. At the net, Ramstack recorded the lone solo block as she added an assisted block while Fullenkamp and Tarlos had two assisted blocks each. 

The Gorloks will open conference play on Saturday, September 20 hosting the Webster University Tri-Match with matches against MUW and Blackburn College for Senior Day.
